pop rocks
Discovered at Sam’s Club the other day that repeatedly compressing a stack of 400 coffee filters sounds almost exactly like walking through snow. No joke. I’m applying for a job as a foley artist next week.
Drove through the most torrential downpour I’ve ever experienced last night, a solid wall of water from the Wade Avenue split near Raleigh to the Durham Freeway, or about 10 miles. I was hoping my car windows wouldn’t shatter from the lightning bolt strikes not a quarter of a mile away. The worst part of it all is that my car’s alternator belt slips terribly in anything more than a mild rainshower. What this means is that the car’s voltage drops to ~10V, the headlights dim and the windshield wipers slow, among other things. Not a pleasant proposition. I’ve tried to fix it repeatedly, but belt dressing doesn’t seem to have much effect. I’m thinking about making an aluminum shield for that part of the engine bay. Thus go the joys of driving a 19-year-old car in a North Carolina summer.
But the good news, after all that, is that temperatures are bearable again.
This is simultaneously the most disturbing and most hilarious activity I have ever heard about.

That storm last night was strange. It wasn’t raining overly hard where I was and I could hardly hear thunder but the lightening was spectacular.
I SO knew it was gonna be dwarf tossing….
I just knew it. :)
You`ve never heard of dwarf tossing??? Dude, it`s the best…
Greetings from the land of tomorrow. Sorry, but gotta run. Hear ya`ll have it pretty hot over there… :)
I’m that predictable, huh? :)
I just heard about it yesterday. We had an office lunch and drifted on to the topic somehow. One of my coworkers mentioned that there are “troupes,” if you will, of dwarves/midgets that rent themselves out for “midget tossings” at bars and fraternities. The latest thing apparently is to have them don velcro suits and toss them into a velcro wall… I was in tears from laughing so hard.
And greetings! Do you want a Skyline yet? Glad to hear you’re well :)
The heat lightning has been really amazing this year. It’s almost like we have our own aurora borealis down here…
someone (I’m not gonna say who) spends waaaay too much time with the wiki search engine for their own health ;)
in other news: have you checked your mail lately?
Hahaha
In my defense, I didn’t search for dwarf tossing on Wikipedia without having heard first about the activity from a co-worker.
But you’re right; I do waste far too much time on there :)
And yes! I received your lovely cds on Saturday, much to my delight! I cannot believe you found a couple of those (the French ones in particular). So awesome. I listened to Plump DJs blasting through my crappy paper speakers in Audi last night whilst “cruising” down Franklin, pretending (with some success) I wasn’t the tall, lanky white geek that I am. And the mix cd is great too. I’ve enjoyed the Bowie, Garbage, and middle eastern techno very much :) Thank you!
most importantly, have you listened to that mixed cd all the way through? the last song is the um, pinacle of the music, haha ;)
I love the Stéphane Pompougnac album, too…
…actually they were all really good, and I *knew* that you would appreciate them at least as much, if not more, than I did.
I’m still going gaga over Hem and Vienna Teng, so we *definitely* have to keep this cd exchange alive!
