I just got back from the store where I bought some toothpaste. Tooooothpaste. Tooth-paste. We smear whitish paste on the bristly end of a miniature brush and scrub our teeth with the resultant concoction two, three times a day. It was momentarily amusing standing there in the store thinking about it. Ever have those moments when you step back mentally from something you do day-in day-out and think about it from another perspective? Family dinners are fun to think about. At a preset time during the day, we all gather together around a wooden platform in a designated chamber of the house for the purpose of placing various nutrients in a particular orifice at the top of our bodies and ingesting them. Ever think of what a well-intentioned alien would tell his superiors upon reporting back from a reconnaissance mission to Earth? Probably something similar. Try explaining something you do routinely without using any of the words that sum up various processes involved in that action (eat, drink, sleep, talk, walk, drive, etc).

Beautiful ginko leaves. We had a ginko tree in the front yard of our old house where i grew up (Rocky Mount, NC). One of the few ginkos in the state (or so i’m told). Incredibly beautiful.

yes, the way you discuss how aliens would feel when looking at our culture. its the stepping outside of your own shoes (however much that is possible) and observing people that is the basis for anthropology (at least in my opinion). hence the reason that my favorite hobby (people watching) could be considered academic, whoo hoo ;)
well, China does indeed have wineries… but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that they’re worth visiting. However, I can get fairly decently priced European wines, so I’m thinking about splurging on a Pinot Noir for a friend’s housewarming gift (since of course I get to have some too, that way)
