Today is Diane’s and my fourth wedding anniversary. My perception of how the time has passed is kind of contradictory; on one hand, the years run together and it feels very short, but then I place a four-year span of time up against other periods in my life, and I realize how long it is in actuality.
It’s been an amazing adventure so far, and I see no reason for that quality to change. For all our talk and wistful thinking about changing circumstances, locations, vocations and externals, anyone who’s ever been involved in their family will tell you just the day-to-day provides sufficient joys and sorrows to trump any shift in life situation. Do we not venture out because we’re intimidated by the unknown? Perhaps. But more often than not, I think it’s because the immediacy of the emotions experienced in being married and raising children far outweighs any tenuous longing for new surroundings that might flit across our mind. Family is the substance of life; circumstances are just the trappings.
And I love her voice. I just got off the phone with her; my daily lunch time phone call. I could listen to that voice forever—I would camp outside in mid-January to hear her read the phone book. I would endure considerable distress for pleasure of hearing her talk about anything. Macroeconomics. Loop quantum gravity. The Peloponnesian War. Absolutely anything. And I get to go home to her in four hours. And then comes our weekend mini-getaway. I can’t wait.

You’re wonderful to me. I love you. Happy Anniversary, Tree.
