It’s all academic, you know? That’s something that hit me over the head a couple of weeks ago. I had subconsciously come to the conclusion that somehow English and other right-brained courses were “superior” to math courses and such since they seemed to deal with “real-life” situations and emotions, not just doing exercises and (what seemed like to me) playing games with numbers. But in my poetry class, it finally hit me: It’s all academic. The poems we read might deal with lofty subjects such as history, war, love, violence, but in the end, it’s not going to do the world any more good than those number games we play in math class. Poems are word games, if you will (beyond their relevance to us). We have to choose to take anything we come across and make something out of it, to DO something. It’s all academic until you do something. *sound of Matt descending from soap box* :o)

Y’all are just jealous that I can put something remotely close to relevant (in a societal/cultural/philosophical sense) in my journal, and I’ve only been doing this thing for what, two days? :o)

My newbie status is poking through my articulate veneer. *sigh* Okay, where was I? Ah yes, as far as what I plan on doing, I think the most basic thing one can do when invested with academic knowledge is react with a certain humility. To not revel in your acquired wealth of learning, but to seek ways to use in a practical manner. In other words, I’m going to use the knowledge to connect with people, to build bridges, to find common grounds that would open up avenues into deeper intellectual (and spiritual) territory and allow God to help them through me. Call me idealistic, but I can’t just read/write poetry and not want to share it, draw something and not want people to see it, learn things about my car and not want to help someone with theirs, gain a visual literacy about design things and not want to offer my knowledge for someone’s benefit. We’re all good at something; we’re all given talents, put in situations where we learn things; I think giving advice (tactfully, of course) is a duty, servanthood is a necessity.
By the way, Elyse, unless you live in England, it’s curiosity.

type < i> (without the spaces) before whatever you want to be in italics. then type after the last word you want in that oh so perty style.
