afternoon notes
1. Cool word of the day: ardent.
2. Why do groups of girls spontaneously break into song when they hear a corny song in a movie? Maybe not in the movie theater, but it certainly occurs when watching DVDs at home or whatever. Mystifying.
3. Coming back from lunch today, I saw a handwritten sign by the side of the road: “Free wood for sale.” I think it’s safe to assume their profit margin is pretty killer.

#3
There are a few signs in Mariposa county outside a mom and pop grocery store advertising thier wares and home made items. I remember coming back from camping one time and seeing “fresh nuts”, “tasty cherries”, and “fudge packed daily”. I’m wondering if i’m the one with the dirty mind or them.
ahahahahahahaha
You can’t be serious with the “fudge packed daily.” The other two I’ll buy :)
That’s awesome.
I’m serious. I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s all true.
1. Like ‘my ardent butt flung itself into the river for relief’? Heh. Dunno…it was just the first thing that came into my head after reading the definition. ‘Ardent butt’ just has a nice ring to it. Makes me think of Calvin and Hobbes, perhaps. Sounds like something he’d say…
2. Inherent insecurity lunges at the chance to be a part of any spontaneous group activity, no matter how meaningless… Um. Wait. Was that…out…loud…?
3. Probably went to business school at N.C. State. At least that what it sounds like to me. Doncha agree, Matt?
And now that i’m done heckling you for the night, i thought i’d relate something amusing from my camaro list. Evidently after telling the story of last Saturday’s fun, i am now referred to as ‘Johnny hp’ and am expected to show up at Memphis to help them beat the tar out of some of the other non-camaro classic cars on the dragstrip. At least i have a full array of volunteers to help as the pit crew! Mike L. even offered to lend me his drag tires for a few runs if i didnt have any of my own by then. Great guys. Anyways, i thought it was funny. I told Kristi and she said ‘that’s my boy!’
Oh, and i enjoyed the pictures. Will probably see you sometime tomorrow…
Happy holidays!
1. What a beautiful illustration of the word used in the context of a sentence. You should submit that to Webster’s. There’s no way they wouldn’t use it.
3. NCSU has a business school? News to me…
Nobody else on that list has horsepower comparable to yours? I mean, if they single you out and give you a nickname it must reference an outstanding quality that you have. I’d just think that 511 hp wouldn’t really faze them all that much.
Merry Christmas!
3. My point exactly. Perhaps a better way to put it would be ‘sounds like they took business courses at NC State.’ I’m sure they must have some sort of intro bus. courses…
Actually a lot of them are into road racing or autox or non-performance oriented restoration, though the majority *are* more the drag racing type. A couple of them do have upwards of 600 hp, but most of them do not. I think the novelty is that i’m so young and a relative newcomer. They’ve been a big part of my efforts over the past year, as well. I would say that most of them have enough hp to put ’em in the mid 12’s, but very few have run anything faster than low 11’s. One of our more serious racers, Gordon Warren, participates regularly in NHRA events and has won at least one, that i know of. He says he’s gotten so used to his ~11.2 second car that it actually seems kind of boring to race, but when his friend let him race his car that ran in the 10.7’s it was quite another animal.
But contrary to popular belief, dragracing isn’t all about the most hp and fastest times. The focus is more on consistency. If you can run a consistent 12.5 you will probably beat the guy with a faster car but an unreliable setup. This is due to the fact that the way they do (most) dragraces is that you display your dial in (the time you will come the closest to running but not run faster than) and the tree will light off in a way that starts the different cars at different times to make up for the difference in expected ETs. In other words, the slower car gets to go first. This way a 14 second car can still beat out a 12 second car if he’s dead reliable and knows exactly what his car will do and make it do the same thing every time. It’s all about the setup, traction, and consistency. Max hp isn’t really a huge concern of theirs. 300-350 rwhp is about normal and all that they really need in order to do what they have to do. Plus, very few of them have generous budgets to play with, either. It’s more like a hobby they’ve been doing for a long time and the focus isnt really on racing or hp, per se (although these topics tend to be very popular).
Anyways. There’s a little glimpse into the classic-fbody list mentality.
Hoping to get the ’69 fixed today and bring it back to the garage. I’m meeting Steve at your apt at 6 to see Oceans 12 tonight. Seen it yet? I think Paul might be coming, too…
