Donald, John, and I took advantage of the day (mostly) indoors to rearrange the apartment a bit. Most prominently, other than the fact that it’s been cleaned, is the dining area, which was substantially revamped and looks quite cozy now, in contrast to the previous makeshift, cardboard box look.
I talked the permanent position over with Betty last Friday, and I think I’m going to take it. The big unknown at this point is whether I’ll be able to request off enough time for our trip to Europe. I think I can arrange it but I’m not sure.
I wish I had something of substance, not just for the fact that this journal is read by various people (all four of you), but just for myself. When I don’t have anything substantial to share, or a recent revelation I’ve had, or anything of that nature, I feel like it reflects on my thought life and the tack that my existence in general is taking. It’s not true, but… Where am I? Surrounded by snow, a blanket of whiteness… Metaphor for something? Perhaps. I’m not going to read too far into it, at least not in a way that would have a serious bearing on decisions, but only in the fluffy, poetic, inconsequential sense.

I had that on the stereo last night and the beeping comes on… John doesn’t say anything but gives me the “what-the-hell-is-this” look before I stop it and put in something else. Maybe it’s like the tone at the end of Sgt. Pepper that John Lennon said he included just to bother the listener’s dogs?
And yeah, those were the lyrics that really got me…

the fanboards have all these complex theories about the beeping being an alarm clock, meant to signal the end of a harrowing night in nighttown by the man who is the ‘narrator’ of a.b. and z. nighttown has its own definition, which i can’t quite give eloquently. basically the theory runs that the narrator has tripped backwards through a bottle of booze (and maybe some recreational drugs) into a world a little bit like the backstreets of tokyo and a little bit like east berlin, where he explores his darker side (allusion to rock star excesses?) and the destruction of his relationship with a woman (allusion to edge’s divorce happening while a.b. was being made). achtung baby and zooropa are sister albums, the narrative stretches between them, and the alarm is supposed to signal waking up in the morning after it’s all over…the end of the bad acid trip.
or so the fans and critics speculate. :) it makes a lot more sense in bill flanagan’s until the end of the world. (great book of stories, whether you like u2 or not. i made elyse read it.)
hahaha :o) That’s a long road trip just for redecorating… But we are skilled–managing to give the apartment a completely different feel without actually buying any extra furniture. Oh yeah.

I had a feeling those albums were closely related. I mean, Z takes the musical development a step further (and is a bit less accessible because of it), but I can definitely sense thematic similarities between a lot of the songs… Question: Did Edge’s state of mind during the making of A.B. play a part in the development of “Wild Horses” and “So Cruel?” Interesting to hear a more avid fan’s perspective :o)
Elyse had that book lying around more than once when I dropped by her dorm room at jolly old UNC. I’d always pick it up and thumb through it, distracted by the pictures of course. Maybe I should finally read it.
ah yeah, it is .. but you’ve got to give me some credit for asking right? :) lol. i’m not really sure why i want to rearrange already. i think i’m just bored with it already. it might be because it doesn’t feel like “home” yet. maybe a little paint would help. :) we’ll see!
i don’t see it as much in wild horses but i could see it in so cruel. the song i see it in most is ultraviolet, but that is probably the power of suggestion, since i’ve read flanagan’s analysis of some of the lyrics (there is a silence that comes to a house / where no one can sleep / i guess that’s the price of love / i know it’s not cheap). of course, no one really knows anything since no one who actually wrote the songs is talking. :) i don’t know what came first, flanagan or fan talk, but as far as i know, all the theories were spun independent of the four band members.
anyhow, if you do read it, i’d love to hear your opinion. i thought it was a really well written book.
