Alternately busy and slow today here at work… At the moment I am toying incessantly with the little widgets and doodads by my keyboard. There are two hose clamps, three plastic thingamajigs, a metal angle bracket, and washers of assorted sizes… And now Bob’s furtively surfing eBay Motors. Must participate.

My work involves huge fiberglass molds, teak furniture and cabinetry, lots of sketching, Pro/E modeling, Illustrator drawing, a communal office space, and salt water.
You are a…graphic designer of some flavor? The things that are present where you work aren’t foreign to me–I went to school with many a graphic design student who swore vehemently at the printer the night before the crit :o) So, I know of that which you speak.

Take a bow :o) I’m the industrial designer for a sportfishing boat manufacturer. We are the General Motors of the sportfishing boat industry in attitude, if not in volume. The company is a mass of inefficiency and chaos more often than not, but like you, it’s a good first job out of school :o)

I work for Nextech Holdings, which is exactly what it sounds like. (A holding company) I do design for all 5 companies, but most of the FUN design work I do is for a nation-wide distributor of indoor tanning products, by the name of T.W. Tan. There is only one distributor in the nation that’s larger than us, and we’re about to squash it like a bug. (optimism!) It’s a very cosmetic and image conscious industry, I’m sure you can imagine some of the material I work with. Bikini models, etc. I’m discovering that *most* companies are masses of inefficiency and chaos!
Neat-o. Must be interesting working for a tanning company up in Minnesota :o) I’m one to talk, though–I’ve been in Florida for almost three months already and am still as white as an Oreo filling.
Ha, I’m whiter than white, too! I’m the industry example of what *should* be an easy sell. I’m the walking representation of my own target market. Yeah, MN sure is cool. (hello, Ms. Sarcastic) I don’t know if I would like living in FL, do you enjoy it? Where where you at previously? I dream and drool over escaping to the Pacific Northwest, but I’d have to be a total moron to walk away from this job right now.
I’ve looked longingly at the Pacific northwest many times (usually in the aftermath of a movie like Sleepless in Seattle), but my attitude towards the job search last fall was, “Once I start getting job offers, then I’ll get picky about location.” This was the only one I got, and it was a great oppotunity, so this was it.
I grew up in central North Carolina and attended college there. It’s warmer down here, to be sure, but the cost of living is cheaper, and the weather is much, much more consistent (an important thing in my book). I’d enjoy Florida even more if I had more friends to hang out with, but given my temperament and situation, these things take time. Do you enjoy Minnesota?

That was my attitude too, and I happened to find myself in a job that I really enjoy. The location leaves something to be desired, but I’m young. I have a lot of living to do, and a lot of places I’d like to see. And will see! I do like some things about MN- Minneapolis has a great Arts/Entertainment scene. I get to a lot of shows, which is cool. I *hate* the winters though, I grew up in the midwest and I’m sick to death of it.
