standing in a thundercloud / as dark as your hair
I have desk drawer here at work filled (well, not filled, but you know) with bits and fragments of potential entries, snippets from songs I’m in the process of listening to and beginnings of poems. I did have one idea for a poem’s “gimmick:” to play with verb tense throughout, (apparently) randomly selecting tenses to give an impression that the poem is stretched out in time, or at least that the emotions expressed are more than just a momentary point of contact between the mind and the page (or screen). It happened when I was listening to Over the Rhine’s “Suitcase” earlier in the week. I was arrested with the thought that not only do I think the song is beautiful now, I will always think the song is beautiful. There are some like that, that if you let them will always make you ache no matter what station in life you find yourself.
It’s been raining most evenings lately. The day gets hot and sticky until the clouds make it dark as evening around 5 p.m. The intensity varies from day to day, but we will generally get some rain. It’s making the backyard grass look more lush, no mean feat.
We destroyed the kitchen last weekend. Totally. The only things left are the section of counter immediately over the dishwasher, the sink, the stove and the fridge. New cabinets are coming in soon and my father, father-in-law and me not only ripped out the existing cabinetry, we tore down one of the pantry walls and put up drywall in its place. It was an exhausting but productive day.
Whoo-hoo! Sounds like fun. Updating a kitchen is always a good idea. Not only will you get to enjoy it yourself every day, but it’s always a good selling point and increases the value and appeal of the house.
Drywall is one of the skills i’ve recently picked up through my job. It’s really not that difficult once you’ve done it a couple of times. But it still takes some experience and patience to get it looking nice and smoothe.
We’ve had a drawer face fall off, as well as a couple little kitchen things here and there that need some attention. But that’s what you get for buying such an old house…

I’ve heard (and experienced) that the kitchen makes a big difference. We’re just looking forward to having usable cabinetry at this point, haha.
Drywall was pretty easy compared to spackling yesterday. That is really an art, one that I don’t think I mastered. But it was a good intro.
Sorry we missed you guys the other week! I hope the shower went well. We WILL all get up together at some point… :)
