1. My brother David is ENGAGED. This is somewhat huge and I’m beyond happy for him and Rachel, his fiancée. Evidently he proposed last night at the Court of the Carolinas in Raleigh (I can attest to the area’s romanticity). Read her account here. David’s side of it is pending–as he told me when I called to congratulate him, he and Rachel agreed to write their impressions of the evening without reading each other’s. So, as they say, watch this space.
2. Random pictures from the day:

My roommate David and his guitar this afternoon.

I made it rain this afternoon (read: washed the car). Actually it hasn’t rained yet. But it’s inevitable, really. I wonder what the statute of limitations on that superstition is? Still, my car cleans up pretty nicely for a 20-year-old jalopy, no?

L’interieur de la voiture. C’est ici que la conduite se passe. Comme ça se voit, c’est un endroit très agréable pour l’activité.
3. I can recall a couple of songs where I preferred what I originally heard in the lyrics to the actual words sung. To put it another way, the singer of the song didn’t sing particularly clearly, out of laziness or artistic interpretation or some combination of the two. Consequently, in listening to the song my mind connected the syllables I heard into different words than the singer meant. And in reading the liner notes or looking up the lyrics online, my affection for the songs in question was slightly tempered in learning the actual words.
One is Sarah McLachlan’s “Ice.” One line in the chorus reads, “The only comfort / is the moving of the river.” Until I read the lyrics I heard, “The only comfort / is Innulèa the river,” as though she were naming the river. To me it was almost the key verse, the emotional core of a haunting song. Something about the name of the river, like she’s referencing a constant companion in a difficult time, made the song that much more appealing to me. Oh well. I can still hear it if I want to.
4. Flight yesterday went splendidly. Just a short (1.1 hr) solo flight down to Lexington and back, practicing landings while there and ground reference maneuvers on the way back. It was a confidence booster after the previous Friday.
5. Rented Strictly Ballroom and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. Watched the former a while ago. I wasn’t in the mood for particularly heady fare tonight, just a nice switch-off-the-brain evening at home. I forgot how much I like Strictly Ballroom. It’s a polished, entertaining, solid film with great dancing and funny moments in the rapid-fire, Baz Luhrmann style. Although I couldn’t help thinking throughout the movie how nice it must be to be near eye-level with your dance partner. Still, highly recommended.

5. Agreed.
congrats on your future sister-in-law!
Your brother and his fiance are ridiculously cute. Congrats to them!
strictly ballroom = bleh, you should totally just watch “shall we dance” (original japanese version) for any of your ballroom dancing movie desires to be fulfilled ;)
also: my sister Jenna just got engaged… I get to attend a wedding on December 22nd in LAS VEGAS (!!!) which is exciting. picking out bridesmaid dresses over the internet: not quite as exciting, but meh, it’ll be awesome.
Hey, it didn’t rain, did it??? I think if you make it another 12 hours or so without rain, then the superstition is bust.
That sounds like a reasonable span of time. If memory serves, this is the first time that’s happened…
I’ll put that on my “to see” list :)
How does it feel to have a sibling engaged? It hasn’t quite sunk in for me yet.
Recollection is a tricky thing…
But yes, somewhere around 48 hours has got to be the time limit on such a superstition such as that, or it really would always be true… even droughts end eventually!
It’s up
My version is up. You have to read the second entry first. I.e. it’s two parts and the first post of the day needs to be read first, so you’ll have to scroll down. I didn’t want LJ eating up a huge post. The rest of Rachel’s story is coming pending the completion of her religion paper.
its odd… at first she was very low-key about it, but now she’s getting all excited and “bride to be” ish about it, which is cute. Me? I’m not sure what I’m feeling… some people might feel bad if their younger sibling were getting married before them, etc, but in all actuality, marriage isn’t a huge priority for me.
However, I also have the benefit that this wedding will be in VEGAS, which just makes it awesome on so many levels (I am totally gonna hire an Elvis impersonator, heheh, my sister is gonna kill me)
1. Congrats.
2. Nice looking car. Having had cars that were 35, 9, and now 13 yrs old, i can appreciate when a car maintains it’s appearance through time.
3. Ditto. Usually the lyrics we make and superimpose on a song in our own respective minds have much more meaning or logic to them than the actual ones. I don’t even try to find out the ‘true’ lyrics anymore…
4. 1.1 hrs = 66 minutes. Now was that six minutes really worth the confusion of decimal places??? I think not. Glad you survived. Now i’ll have to go back and read about ‘the previous Friday’…
5. Seems like i’ve seen that first film…don’t really remember. Second film…oh yeah. ;)
Cheers!
Great writeup, D-Qwon. I was smiling all the way through. And as I’m sure others have told you, don’t sweat the speedbumps in the evening–they just make for more interesting stories later on. Who wants everything to go perfectly? :)
2. 35 years old? Impressive. What car was that?
And who this be?
Oh duh. I feel dumb–the car ages should’ve tipped me off. Hi John :)
