The office is, of course, abuzz with American Idol talk, and I have to admit that although I’ve never actually watched the show on television, I do find myself getting sucked a bit into the speculation. And yes, I’ve dialed up a few clips on youtube.com just to see what the contestants sound like.
I have to say, though, after hearing this morning that Chris Daughtry was eliminated, it reminded me of one of the few performances of his that I’ve seen, where he sang “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” (and did a good job of it too, I thought). Bret doesn’t have the music on in the office at the moment so the song’s been bouncing around in my head, and I can’t help but remember how the premise of the song has always irked me a little bit. Specifically, how the song goes on and on asking if the man in question has ever told his woman a laundry list of things. I don’t presume by any means to have the market cornered on knowing what a woman needs, but the emphasis in the song on telling rather than showing has always rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, telling the woman she’s loved is all fine and good, and I’m sure it’s needed or at least very much wanted, but wouldn’t it be better to show her she’s loved? Through actions? Talk is cheap, right? Not that I do this (demonstrate to Diane she’s loved) as often as I should, but it’s where my values lie.

I might *might* be alone in this, but, it is a combination. You most certainly show me daily how precious I am to you but, really, without the words, its hollow service and duty. However, if you were to feed me a bunch of lines (gag.) without backing them up, I would consider that a bit lazy, actually. I think this is a lot like the “faith without works” and/or “gifts without love” paradigm(s). Love/respect? Symbiotic.
Anyway. You can tell how much I’m watching American Idol these days.
Yeesh. My TV’s not been on in probably a year and a half, save the occational DVD.

And yeah…I just keep up with it as a matter of cultural curiosity. There are much more worthy causes in which I invest my time.
I watch Fox News or the History Channel occasionally with Diane at her house when we’re relaxing during the evening, but the television at my house hasn’t been on in months. I only get two non-snowed-out channels anyway–yay bunny ears :)

(Kelly Clarkson) is truly the best there is/was. I DO have to say, however, I would like to see a guy win again. I like the Taylor-grey haired-dude. Really “authentic”.
