Well…

I did the deed.

I got a cell phone.

I feel like such a sellout (from the standpoint of my own flimsy “principles,” mind you)… But it reached the point where it was a needless inconvenience not to have one. I was just tired of always having to think about where to find a phone whenever I was lost, or needed to reschedule, or tons of other little day-to-day things.

I certainly don’t plan on being available all the time now. I got the most basic plan you could get, pretty much, so being available 24/7 really isn’t a feasable option anyway.

Let it be said: I am categorically not a phone person. I don’t have a preternatural fascination with electronic gadgets and gizmos. I hate having an extra thing to carry around and to keep up with–I was happy with just the wallet and keys. And my conversational skills, marginal enough as it is, just go completely down the toilet whenever I’m on the phone.

But it needed to be done. I guess we’ll see how this goes.

so this week really IS the week

What kind of cell phone did you get?

    sorry

  2. admin says:

I show you. It’s the most basic flip phone I could get, pretty much, just an LG (brand) thing:

I resigned myself early to the fact that there wasn’t going to be anything cheap and appealing at the store from an industrial design standpoint, so I just got the one with big buttons :)

No worries! You could have left it up :) I can take it.

    phone

I used to feel the same way about cell phones. I thought they were annoying, expensive, and trendy until I actually started to use it all the time ;) I’m not much of a phone person either and I can tell you that not much has changed since I got mine. I just find that it’s easier to use your cell phone instead of asking to use a friends phone, look for a pay phone, or try to remember a persons number. It’ll grow on you after a while.

I still feel the same way about ringtones and all that. No good.

    I’M SO PROUD!!!!

    and it’s Verizon . . . :)

  5. _fivestars says:

This picture has reminded me to trade in my cell phone for the newer model. Thank you, Matt, for your services.

You should choose a really, really obnoxious ring for it… Not that any of the rings aren’t obnoxious.

    Hope you’re having a lovely Friday! :)

  6. admin says:

My mantra during the whole process was, “Simple, basic, simple, basic…”

I’m adjusting, slowly… The hardest part I think is just figuring out where to put the darn thing without it getting in the way. Well, that and finding a ring tone that doesn’t annoy the tar out of me, but that I still notice. Heh.

  7. admin says:

    hahaha :)

I figured you’d have something to say about my purchase, being one of the more outspoken proponents of the cell phone “lifestyle,” as it were.

Hope you’re having a lovely day. Praying for you about finals! When do they end so I can start reading the book? I don’t want to get too far ahead but I have read the first couple of chapters and I can feel it pulling me in…

  8. admin says:

My services are at your disposal, madam. Wait. That didn’t sound right. I’m glad my services have satisfied you. Crap. That either. Oh nevermind.

I have chosen the least offensive ring I could find. It’s this one.

So far so good :) Hope everything is well where you are too.

  9. redscarf says:

Just don’t clip it to your belt or pants. Worst fashion statement ever.

  10. admin says:

Good suggestion, but there really aren’t many options besides that if I want to keep the protective leather boot on it, which basically doubles its thickness. Without the boot I can easily slip it into my pants pocket, and it’s what I intend to do when I go out, for day-to-day affairs I’m leaning toward the clip on my pocket in spite of its visual abhorrence.

Must be nice to be able to get away with a purse.

The nice thing is, when you need a break you just turn it off and leave it home and it saves all your messages—when people decide to leave messages (so a good greeting is key). And people really don’t even know the difference, they figure you are just out of range or something. So instead of using the hip-belt, you can just leave it turned off and in the office. Nobody will suspect anything. Trust me. Sure, every once in a while someone will claim your phone is off all the time. All you have to do in that situation is give them a cold stare and say, “No it’s not, I always keep my phone on.” And really, if you have a good greeting, no one will even suspect your phone is off. They’ll just wonder and marvel and giggle at your greeting. Even better, if you find yourself doing this often, is to ditch the cell phone and give people your home phone and just tell them it is a cell phone…

  12. _fivestars says:

You can easily get away with a MurseTM.

  13. faithenough says:

I’m in favor of a cell phone simply because I’ve been told I have one growing out my ear ;)

Thanks for the prayers. Apparently I’ve had many people praying for me today, as many have approached me to let me know. My father actually called me on my way to work this morning because God told him to pray specifically for me. Kinda cool, but it makes me wonder if I’m going to need all this strength sometime soon. Hmm.

Finals end Monday for me, so I’ll probably start reading the book on Monday afternoon. What chapter are you in? I’ll hopefully match you by Monday night, and we can start our discussion.

  14. _fivestars says:

I don’t know how to respond to the first part…

Oh, that ring. My ring is actually quite similar.

    :) thanks for the deletion!

  15. deepr_still says:

Ok Matt, you inspired me. I, too, can reach out into the 21st century and conform to the overwhelming pressures of our society by: creating a livejournal (or is that a ‘livejournal identity’?). Anyways. Tah-dah! To each his own. Now if i can just think of what to say… Fortunately my writing skills are somewhat superior to my conversational skills. (aka pronouncing words correctly and in an intelligible order) But i’m working on it.

Actually, i just think having an online journal will encourage me to resume writing in general. I used to enjoy it immensely. But then i got married and had no further use for communication at all. ;-P

Communication in marriage: it’s all a big hoax. (lol)

    cya,
    John

  16. nickelolio says:

uh oh? you hopped on the cell phone train?? this could be a bad thing! :) jk. i’m impressed you’ve gone w/out one this long. i wish i could have. it’s too much money. :)

  17. admin says:

Okay I’ve kept myself in suspense about this all weekend. What is this wonder known as a “Murse™?” Are you sure it would look plausible?

  18. admin says:

    hahaha

I’ll file that one away under “Wedding tips from John.”

Well…it had to happen sooner or later. My acquisition of a cell phone and yours of a blog. Nice to see we could make our respective leaps reasonably close together.

So, um, should I post about your car on or do you want to, haha?

  19. admin says:

Is it okay that I had to read that through about three times before I got the jist of it? :)

Great plan, though! I’ll certainly ponder it.

  20. admin says:

I’m just on the second chapter–not too far in. You’ll blow by me in no time, I’m sure.

    Hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday :)

  21. faithenough says:

You as well! I finished studying a few hours ago, so I’m spending the rest of the night entangled in Christmas decorations and presents! ♥

  22. _fivestars says:

Diesel makes a really swell MurseTM. This one (view 2, 3) is great. It has just enough room for a book or two, cell phone, pen, and wallet (or whatever else you decide should be carried in it.) This Diesel Murse TM (view 2) is nice, too, but in my opinion it looks better in black. Both bags are not only practical, they also look quite sharp. Nothing fancy, obtrusive, or excessively ornate — just something nice in which you can easily tote around essentials. Few things look more ridiculous than over-stuffed, bulging pockets… and as another comment said, the phone-on-belt look is kind of silly. Not that I would make fun of you or anything… I just think a MurseTM would be a good choice for you. And no, it wouldn’t look girly.

  23. admin says:

Are you sure I wouldn’t look girly? Or is this some sort of elaborate joke designed to prey on my affinity for streamlining the essentials I carry with me everywhere? :) Hmm…

I just have visions of the Friends episode where Joey gets a kind of Murse™ and the derision he encounters… It was funny, though.

Hope you’re having a lovely morning, Em.

  24. admin says:

Money was the main reason I didn’t get one for the longest time, but… I finally just had had enough of the inconvenience. I definitely understand where you’re coming from, though :)

  25. _fivestars says:

Do you think I’m lying to you? Joey’s Murse™ actually looked like a purse. That was the problem.

My morning was fine. Now I want to go get Thai or Indian food… I can’t decide. How are you?

  26. admin says:

No, no…sorry. I’m just being dumb.

I do remember that about the episode. Joey’s Murse™ was hiked up just underneath his shoulder… The ones you suggest seem to hang a little lower–which I think would be preferable.

I would go for Indian but that’s just ’cause I haven’t had it in a good while. Mmm…curry :)

  27. _fivestars says:

No apology necessary. I just don’t want you to think I’m trying to convince you to accessorize like a woman… that’s all. Each Murse™ I linked to has adjustable straps that would allow them to be worn the same way you would a messenger bag. I don’t know. I don’t expect you to purchase one, I’m just saying.

I tried to go get Indian food, but it turns out the place I visit is closed on Mondays. Instead, I went to a local whole foods market/cafe and had a hummus sandwich.

    Yeaaaah.

  28. deepr_still says:

Wow, you sparked quite a flurry of discussion in this post, Matt. I’m impressed. Guess it confirms how big a deal your getting a cell phone is for all your peoples to react so drastically. Or maybe you just tapped into the latent emotions so many people possess about cell phone usage. Or perhaps the convergence of two such controversial topics (Matt’s life and cell phones) creates a sympathetic wave of reaction that builds to tsunamic (?) proportions. Of course i have to make up words to even communicate clearly…what that proves, i dont know…but i’m sure it explains something.

    Enjoy your new-found fame. ;-P

  29. ztibugey says:

proves you have a marvelous grasp of the english language, or so says the linguistics major.
    :o)

  30. deepr_still says:

Yes, young padawan. Sit and my feet and take notes… hehe.

Well, these things have to happen in conjunction in order to bring balance to the force. (Hm, i see a subtle theme in this post. Yes: even in all two sentences.) You know how it is, people inspire people when they take such leaps into the beyond.

Hey, if you wanna post on gearheads, be my guest. I knew you were taking those pics for a reason. ;-) Besides, i dont really care for ‘bragging’ about my car, so it’s nice to have an objective opinion to validate my efforts. …Although i *would* like to ‘meet’ makovette sometime. I’ve admired his car for a while now. But that’s ok…i dont even know how to post pics on lj yet. So please, feel free. I really get self-conscious doing that kind of thing. I’d much rather sit in the car discussing and analysing, sharing and narrating the experience. ;-P

  31. deepr_still says:

Why thank you. It’s nice of you to try and make me feel better. If you keep this up mebbe i’ll find a new word with which to show my appreciation. ;-)

Linguistics major, huh? What linguistic, exactly? (Oops that’s an adjective, not a new word. Crap. I think i just lost all my new-found language coolness points.) English? I almost chose english as my major, but decided it might be more beneficial to pursue something a bit more, um…practical. (I really hate that word sometimes.) But Kristi’s an english major so i got to vicariously enjoy parts of it through her. Interestingly enough, i tend to get my highest grades in Spanish. Seems kinda weird for a business major. ;-P

  32. admin says:

Yes, the Force™ would have been unbalanced had I gotten a cell phone and nothing else had happened of cosmic significance. Very insightful.

About posting the pics on , I don’t see it as “bragging” per se, but just letting everybody there know what you have. An introduction, if you will. There’s a way to display your car without bragging–just let the pictures, the mod list, and the dyno charts speak for themselves, without any sort of opinionated commentary. Just the facts. I think it’d spark a good discussion.

Posting pics on LJ is just like making a webpage. Just use the [img src] HTML tags in reference to the URL of where the pics are stored (some remote host). You have a ton of webspace already provided by UNC–just fire up the FTP program and you’re set.

  33. deepr_still says:

An introduction, eh? I could probably do that. I need to get a pic of the dyno chart to post and figure out somewhere to host it. UNC, you say? I’m not sure how to use the FTP to set it up. My knowledge is limited to cardomain’s posting instructions…and even then it took me a little while to get the hang of it.

I’ve been having computer problems these past few weeks, resulting in an inabilility to access anything other than my email, unc’s site, livejournal, and a handful of other sites. I think it’s a DNS problem, but my computer as a whole needs some help. I’m waiting until the semester and exams are over to reformat (just in case it’s out of commission for a while). So i really need to do that before i can start learning how to FTP.

  34. admin says:

Let me know when everything with your computer is sorted and I’ll show you how to FTP. You’ll get the hang of it in five minutes. I host all my pictures on the UNC server… I think we get 40M or so.

  35. ztibugey says:

actually, linguistics is the study of language…. like biology is the study of life. that sort of deal.

so, i know how to study languages, take them apart, see similarities and differences between them, how people use them, how languages change, etc, etc.

    :o)

so, why are you a business major? why not spanish? just have a spanish backgrouond can give you all sorts of opportunities, even those you supposedly need a business degree for….
    just a thought.

  36. deepr_still says:

Ah, i see. So no particular language that you’re studying, but just patterns of languages as a whole. I get it. So can you really do all that cool stuff you just said?? ;-)

Erm, well. Guess it has to do with my calling, my roots, my mental predispositions, the environment in which i was raised…a probably a few other things as well. ‘Business’ is in the Daley blood, and not just in the family, but we tend to all think in a distinctly entrepreneurial fashion…which tends to work out well in business. I dunno really, but it’s like all things ‘business’ in the world are clear to me and make sense. I still have much to learn, of course, but i tend to learn it quickly. Probably the reason that spanish has traditionally been my highest grade is that the other classes i’ve taken in those semesters have been philosophy, economics (i ALWAYS get ‘c’s in economics), and sociology (which is cool, but i somehow never get better than ‘B’s…although i’ve heard that ‘trying’ is a good start). My major is more of a survey of these classes along with some business classes scattered here and there.

So there’s my life’s story. (hm. kinda short for one of them…) But anyways. Mind if i add you as a friend? thanks. ‘night.
