night and some things
1. I’ve had Bono’s cover of Richard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (which every artist on the face of the planet seems to have covered by this point) going through my head all day. Not altogether unpleasant, just…there.
2. I’ve also had a small but persistent headache all day. I had one Killian’s last night around 10:30. With food. I wasn’t buzzing at all. Can just one have that effect? I’m an alcohol newbie.
3. Something mentioned during the apologetics conference last weekend that I’ve been mulling over in my mind all week: “Adulthood and maturity are attained with the loss of narcissism.” The speaker for that session, Michael Craven, was giving a talk on sexual ethics in popular culture and their evolution over the course of the past century or so. He denounced the luminaries of the sexual revolution–Freud, Sanger, Kinsey, Hefner and Calderone–and showed how our over-sexualized culture is built upon a disintegrating view of sex, reducing it from the most intimate physical and emotional connection two people can share to mere copulation, a physical act motivated by self-centered desire for gratification and misplaced hedonism. He quoted at length from a writer on the subject (I wish I could remember to whom it’s attributed) and the quote above was mixed in. He used it to make the minor point that the sexual revolution has trapped many of us in a kind of state of perpetual adolescence, focused primarily on gratifying our own desires in at least that arena, if not others. It was a very poignant session.
4. Turns out the Great Expectations trailer is on the DVD after all. I think they must have added it recently, since the last time I rented the film all I can remember is the other version. In any case, it was perfect and just as I remembered it.
2. I’m not an expert by any means, but I don’t think just one can cause an all day headache… couldn’t be anything else?
3. I’m increasingly hating the fact that I’m leaving Wednesday morning for TN… : \ Best o’luck to ya at the coffee house, whichever you choose… Hope you get a good crowd and I look forward to hearing about it and enjoying Round Two!
not that I’m a lush or anything, but its highly doubtful that one beer could give you a headache, period. I’m fairly certain that you would have discovered an alcohol allergy by now (even with your limited experience).
and wow, Great Expectations… very good film, though more in a “pretty colors” kinda way than storyline… it will always remind me of the eastern coast… (happy sigh) oh yeah, and absolutely GREAT soundtrack.

The book is much better than the movie. Dickens just does a better job conveying the passions the film attempts to describe… It feels more substantial, too, and less like a stylistic exercise. And agreed about the soundtrack.
As soon as I get Harsha to fire up his computer and talk him into doing it, yeah… :) Mine is so ancient it doesn’t have a DVD player, let alone the necessary software.

I can think of two off the top of my head:
1. The Hunt for Red October (the movie streamlines and distills Tom Clancy’s penchant for Melville-ish detail and subplots within subplots)
2. Last of the Mohicans (the novel is pretty much unreadable and the film is excellent)
But you’re right; books being superior is definitely the norm.
