I am shot, body and mind, and it’s only 4 p.m. We did two flight blocks today to make up for last week’s bad weather. The second was my first stage check (which everybody passes, really–they just want to make sure you’re actually making measurable progress). It went really well. All it consisted of was another instructor flying with me, not giving me feedback or correcting my procedures, but just telling me what to do when and making notes. There was something about not being able to defer to the flight instructor that kicked in a survival instinct of sorts, I think, and I was able to run through all the procedures very well and maintain my bearings in the area. I’m beginning to feel like I’m actually flying the plane instead of just kind of hanging on and chasing gauges.

Nevertheless, it’s mentally exhausting to be in the air for two and a half hours, even if there was a lunch between in between the hour-long sessions. So between that and the fact that I’ve been working out and running a lot lately, you have an individual in dire need of a nap.

For those of you keeping up with Emily’s journal and adventures, I received a text message from her this morning at 7:30 (12:30 local time, presumably) saying that she made it to England but wasn’t yet in Swansea. She seems well, all things considered :)

Thoughts and prayers for Aaron, his family and especially his mom, who is going through some rather weighty medical issues at the moment. If you are a pray-er, remember them.

Do you have details on Aaron’s mother? I’ll pray.

Also shot… I keep nodding off at the computer here… because last night I was up from midnight till 4 and then up again at 6:30 with a very old Lab i’ve been dog sitting for who had a panic attack and nearly drove me crazy along with her tring to comfort her and decide what to do… anyway, aparently I look like I didn’t get any sleep too…

Forwarded you Aaron’s latest e-mail. Not sure how widely he’d want the precise details to be disseminated.

I can relate to the nodding off thing. Must keep moving… :)

  3. sounds like it was a pretty intense day. way to go :)

thanks for the update on emily! i’ve been thinking of her and hoping that everything was falling into place.

After reading John Locke and David Hume (especially Hume!), Thomas Reid is a breath of fresh air.

I have a philosophy test tomorrow that i’ve been dreading studying for…simply because i hate the subject material. Has to do with personal identification…how do i know that i am me, etc. It’s hard to believe people waste so much of their lives trying to figure these things out, then die. Ugh. Makes me wanna scream. I truly do not care what grade i get on this test, as long as i pass. Merely studying this material is a waste of life that coule be spent on so many more valuable things. (Actually i think even watching tv would be more productive and practical to my everyday life…especially if it’s the National Geographic Channel. I love that channel.)

Have a great day! I think we’re planning on dropping by to see you the Saturday night after next (the 8th) on the way back from Deals’. Probably late evening. Sound good?

Well hay there. Or should I say good afternoon? You must learn some Welsh and greet me in your new native tongue :)

Good luck on the test! I know that stuff can be suffocating sometimes. I have to detox after a week or two of being immersed in it all. Just be glad you’re not studying Descartes. Hoo boy. That was like doing geometric proofs, but 20x more infuriating (“So how do you know you exist?” “I just KNOW it!”)

The 8th sounds good. I’ll be in town this weekend for a little while. Will you be around? I’d love to see the FD (and you guys!)

Thanks for the encouragement! It was intense. We’re going to be emphasizing landings now, though… My next stage check should be far more interesting :)
