Interesting review of the new Coldplay album:

I’ve not heard it (obviously), but substitute a few names and song lyrics and most of the things in the article said about Coldplay could just as easily have been said about U2’s latest, at least in terms of the songwriting. Bands nowadays are so earnest, so linear… There are few lyrical ambiguities, no complex backstory for songs seemingly built of fragments and pieces that become more than the sum of their parts, no more secrets to feel cool for being in on… Among other things. It’s profoundly depressing.

    I shall have to give it a listen, then :) I’ve nothing against Coldplay; I like them by and large–they were just a touchstone for a rant against overarching musical trends I’ve noticed lately…
