as far as i’ll go…
…towards country music. New band discovery: Hem. Perfectly arranged folk/pop with an Appalachian, quasi-American feel (in the Aaron Copland/symphonic sense, at least). Listen to “Half Acre.” Uniformly beautiful stuff, and they sound less affected and more natural than Over the Rhine, no mean feat. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to drive more slowly than the speed limit on the way home. I have a feeling this will be an integral part of my soundtrack over the next few months.

Oh, and btw…I’m back! Finally, after having been internetless for over a month. I know you missed me.
It’s really good. I’ve been listening to the album over the past couple of days and it’s remained fresh far beyond the point where other music gets a little stale and repetitive. Of course it helps that almost all the songs on the cd are really good… I’ll have to burn you a copy.
It doesn’t sound like Nickel Creek. Nickel Creek has a lot more bluegrass influence… but I guess they’d fall in the same genre, folk/pop/bluegrass. I dunno. I don’t really think they sound alike at all.

Um…if you say so. Nickel Creek is as close as i get to anything even remotely resembling country/folk/bluegrass music so to me they’re somewhat similar compared to Vertical Horizon, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Llama Farmers, Blackeyed Peas, and the like. I am ill equiped to make distinctions between what i consider to be sub-catagories…especially since i tend to stay away from that genre as a whole. ;)

I wasn’t trying to “put you in your place” or anything, I just have great love for Nickel Creek and tend to put them in a category of their own.
Nickel Creek *is* in a category of their own, as far as i’m concerned. World-class musicians, great song writing capabilities, great performers, and real down to earth kinda people. No matter how popular/famous they’ve gotten, they are happy just to hang out with us ‘normal folk’ and talk and play and dance. Matt, ever heard any of Steve’s Nickel Creek stories from App.? They’ve played there almost every year for the past four or five…and if you wanna wait around afterwards they’ll just hang out and talk and even give you a private performance if they didnt play something you wanted to hear earlier. (Happened at both App State and that place where they gave a concert in Cary a couple of years ago.)
Anyways, i have tons of respect for the people and the music of Nickel Creek. That’s why it’s the only band of it’s genre that i even listen to at all…for me to listen to that genre means they MUST be special. Well, that and it’s music with special significance for me and my girl. ;)
