I have no idea what to write this afternoon, but I feel like writing.
I need design sensitivity. That’s what it’s all about, I’m convinced. It’s the details that separate the truly talented designers from the wannabes. The fairings, the knobs, the levers, the buttons, the transitions, the nuances, the subtle shades of colors and lights that are poured onto a form, these are the things which make you in the design world. Anyone who knows a computer program or their way around a drawing board can throw big swaths of plastic down and call it a form, or the name of whatever they’re trying to create, a dishwasher, a hair dryer, a place setting, or a pencil sharpener. The details are what I grasp for and are what take up the majority of the design process. I want to design a product that’s airtight. No leaks of information, things I don’t know. When I can achieve these things rapidly enough and have enough of them to show, it will be time to go job hunting. Oh, and for my latest stab at conquering the details, here’s a desktop space heater/fan. It’s still very much a work in progress.
