I think I’ve watched too many movies this week. Saw Jaws last night on the big screen–Regency Park in Cary. It’s a reasonably-sized ampitheater, pretty modern architecture. It’s apparent that at least some of the big bucks made in the area are going towards things like that instead of straight into some CEO’s retirement fund. I had never seen it before, so it was doubly exciting. There was a video projector situated underneath a tent projecting onto a big screen on one side of the arena, with a generous speaker system arrayed above, and subwoofers strategically placed around the lawn, where we were all lying on our blankets and lawn chairs and what-not. One of the best parts about the whole experience was the lightning. The rain had already passed before dusk, so the grass was almost completely dry, but the air was still muggy. And as the movie started, flashes of lightning appeared in the clouds overhead, growing in intensity and frequency, but without the threat of real rain. It was absolutely beautiful, and underscored the suspense of the movie, already loud and on the big screen. What a great show. I couldn’t believe they got away with a PG rating for that movie, though. It’s scary, and there’s a lot of blood and severed limbs, and what happens to Quint near the end really took me aback. Makes you wonder which MPAA bigwig they paid off to bump the rating down. It’s insane.

back then there was no pg-13 rating, and it wasn’t quite an R rating…so it’s pg…
Ahh… That would explain it.
