Lunchtime at the Gazette. Cozy. Scott keeps iTunes playing on Susan’s computer when she’s not here (which is every day except Monday and Friday). He’s older, but he’s got pretty progressive musical taste, which is nice. This morning we listened to a trance/house/trip-hop playlist, nothing too dark, just some EBTG, Faithless, and assorted Massive Attack…

Went to the gym last night for the first time since the youth conference a couple of weeks ago. It had been too long, so I just did a basic all-around workout. It’s a great club, but the music in there is alternately amusing and disconcerting. Last night it was the latter. Most nights have a certain “theme” to them, i.e. one night they’ll play Euro-dance music, the next some upbeat R&B, and so on… Last night I swear it had to have been death metal night. The look on the faces of the housewives scurrying about from the water fountain to the elliptical trainers and back again was completely dazed as Korn, NIN, KMFDM, Tool, and what sounded for all the world like Marilyn Manson blared over the loudspeakers. I was going to say something, but the worst of it came on just as I was about to leave, so I just high-tailed it out. Ah well.

Watched Notorious last night. Stellar film, with some of the best camera work I’ve ever seen in a movie, period, especially the long zoom shot that starts high up with a view of the whole room, then closes until it just frames the key that Ingrid Bergman is nervously holding in her hand. Why do you even need dialogue to expose the plot or characters’ motivations when Hitchcock gives us shots like that? It’s one of my all-time favorites.
