To the tune of “Everyday” by Phil Collins:

The european city was black and jagged against the burgundy sky. Somehow they seemed to bleed into one another, the dark crimson of the sky filling the spaces left by the chimneys and church spires. Her apartment was on the third floor, overlooking the narrow ravine of an alley. Strangely, it was blessed with a large-paned window, which reflected the murky light illuminating the bellies of the clouds. My mind’s eye moved inside the room. I saw squares of light slanting across the floor and up the wall, and masses of dark-hued furniture. She stood, her back to the window, facing the door as he entered. He walked towards her. Both smiled, and she moved towards him. She kissed him on one cheek, and was about to kiss the other when her lips met his and they pressed them together. In a whirl she was caught up in his arms, again and again, never to let go. Their dark silhouettes became one against the window of the apartment…

    It’s a daydream from when I was 13 or 14. I’d put the CD in, close my eyes, and drift away… It was inspired, believe it or not, by reading the Diary of Anne Frank. I think the innocence of that account spoke to my own during those years.
