Valentine’s Day was stellar. For us, it was stretched out over three days, Luke’s and my presents from Diane being given on Tuesday night, mine to Diane on Wednesday and the customary dinner out last night. She is lovely and every minute with her is a delight. How many radiantly beautiful women can laugh with me about the nocturnal badgers of Wales one minute and discuss the philosophy of Hume and Berkeley the next? None, in my experience, and I have her, and she me.
Work hums along. I am (re)learning a 3D CAD program called Form•Z. The designers use it here and it was the first 3D CAD program I learned in college, before moving on to Alias and SolidWorks. I kind of wish I had learned CATIA or Unigraphics instead, given their prevalence in the aerospace industry, but I trust it’s not too late. In the meantime, Form•Z and I are getting reacquainted after some years. It’s not as parametric as SolidWorks, meaning that every feature of a given model doesn’t have a well-defined process of construction that is easily modifiable. The disadvantage of this is that once a given 2D sketch is used to create a 3D model, it is difficult to go back and modify the sketch an inch here or half an inch there, changes which occur frequently in production. The advantage is that it makes the actual model file much smaller and less cumbersome, which frees up program resources for more sophisticated graphics and rendering features. After being so invested in SolidWorks for so long, relearning Form•Z is a bit like learning another language (it’s difficult to “say” the things I want to “say” in the new program using the “phrases” of the old). But I trust my 28-year-old mind is nimble enough to be able to switch between the two easily enough.
