Luke has been experimenting with magnets lately. His Granddad is a toolmaker and works with metal on a daily basis. He also works out of a shop in the basement of their house, an area they both call “the laboratory” and visit frequently. Luke came home one Thursday night from a visit talking about ferrous metals, a term I correctly assumed he learned from Granddad. Luke has a set of magnetic letters on our fridge which he’ll try to stick to various items around the kitchen in order to determine whether they’re a ferrous metal. A few nights ago his Aunt Maralyn and Uncle Josh were visiting, sitting in the living room, and I was alternating between there and the kitchen. Penelope was hanging out in her chair on the kitchen floor, and Luke was playing with his magnetic letters. As I returned to the kitchen from the living room, I happened upon Luke, holding his letter A, arm outstretched, touching it to his sister’s hand, trying to determine if she was a ferrous metal. It was cute.
In other news, in the interest of supplementing my income as a product designer here at ImageWorks, I’ve decided to dive back into freelance graphic design, and more proactively this time. Previously I just let the jobs “come to me,” as it were, without much (or any) self-promotion, but this time I’m going to seek things out. Even a few hours a week would go a long way. I can perform it at a distance, and if the job is local can even coordinate printing at local print shops. Will set up a pricing structure soon. Most of the time the procedure is that the client will provide all copy (text) and images and I will coalesce it into an attractive and functional piece, but I can write copy as well.
