Just for now

I’ve really been enjoying Imogen Heap lately, specifically her album Speak for Yourself. It’s beautifully crafted electronic pop with an offbeat lyrical style–many of her songs sound like they are drawn verbatim from conversations. And the music… It one-ups BT’s envelope-pushing efforts in This Binary Universe by giving his quasi-classical soundscapes a more human element.

Snow is forecast for tomorrow morning. We’ll see if it holds out. Luke is spending the night at his grandparents’ in Lewisville. Diane and I took advantage of the free evening to watch Paris Je T’Aime, a film comprised of a dozen and a half short vignettes sketching characters and relationships in each of the Parisian neighborhoods, or arrondissements. Very good movie, and several of the segments are very moving. I told Diane, though, it wasn’t the nostalgia trip I thought it might be. For one thing, although I’ve visited Paris three or four times, we never lived there, and besides, it’s a fundamentally urban setting, one that I have little experience beyond a week or two in a hotel. The Cote D’Azur, while sharing a basic French-ness with Paris, is still very different, and my affections for France bend toward the particularities of our environment in the south, on the Mediterranean. Even before we watched the movie I thought about roads and directions in the region we lived for five years, and how, given the opportunity to return, I wouldn’t need a map to get from Vence to Monaco or from Coursegoules to Antibes or anywhere we needed to go. I know all those roads, and little changes from year to year in that corner of the Old World.
