I remember flying in weather much like this, albeit a little less windy. The clouds were low and nearly overcast, with patchy openings here and there. I remember one Saturday morning in particular, when I probably shouldn’t have been up there. Posted about it here.
As I walked out the car this morning I heard the whine of a pair of turboprops and looked up just in time to see a King Air shoot between the cloud banks, quickly climbing out of Smith-Reynolds downtown. It was obviously on a IFR flight plan, not only because of the weather but if you had a King Air, why would you fly VFR anyway? Any flights above 18,000 ft have to be IFR, and flying below that in a King Air is like driving 35 mph in a Porsche on the Autobahn… In any case, it’s a beautiful airplane, and seeing it tear between the clouds like that brought back memories of lunch at the airport last year. I sat on the bench in front of the flight school, facing the ramp as a King Air taxied leisurely not 40 ft in front of me, PT6A turboprops pumping out noise and spinning the scimitar-like propellers in impossibly fast arcs. I’d like to do that again soon.
