I took a bunch of songs to work with me this morning, transferred on a USB key from our home computer. It’s happened a few times, and it’s a good way to stock up at work. Among other songs, on a whim, today I included the Nichole Nordeman song “Every Season.” If you’ve not heard it, it’s worth investigating. Diane downloaded it from iTunes a while ago and I hadn’t heard it in a while. Yes, it’s unabashedly saccharine CCM, and it’s not exactly a lyrical triumph, but the sentiment and expression of the song… Somehow, for me, it becomes more than the sum of its parts. I confess I was fairly overwhelmed this morning listening to it at work with my headphones on. It draws worship out of me for the way God’s character and sparks of His plan of redemption are manifest in His creation. And it just makes me want everything good and right and pure and clean. It’s not like I don’t desire those things–deep down, I do almost by default–but some events have the ability to push those (true) desires to the forefront, where they belong.
We sang Every Season in Anno Domini (the A Cappella group I was in) and it was always so peaceful and beautiful. It was one of my favorites that we did.
I regret that I didn’t get to hear you guys perform it. Diane, who sings, found the song and has said that it’s one that she would love to perform too.
