Seriously contemplating coming back here. Doesn’t seem like that much has changed, and I just need to write. I miss it. I migrated our joint blog to another service for a little while, and even integrated it with our webpage, but I found it harder to write spontaneously there. Kind of appropriate, too, that this new post comes two years to the day after I “signed off,” as it were. So we’ll see. I’ve checked my friends page on occasion and it seems like most folks have moved on. But that was never really why I was here in the first place–although it WAS nice to have an audience. I suppose that collection of motivational factors is common to most bloggers.

I’ve always liked LiveJournal. When I started my journal I didn’t know any other sites, and truth be told there weren’t many. I had no knowledge of the open-source software movement (odd coming from an NCSU alum, where comp sci majors are a dime a dozen), from which LJ came, but I think if I had I would have been even more drawn to it than I was. And although LJ has “sold out” to a degree, what with the ads and all the rest, it still seems like a good place to be, with a measure of user control most other blogs don’t have. So here I am again.

So what has changed in two years? Plenty. I don’t really fancy writing a bulleted list of developments, though, and I’m sure I’d leave some out, so what say I just resume posting and fill in the details as we go along? Deal?

I should bring you up to speed on the basics, though–Diane and I are still living in Winston-Salem, I have a job doing design for a local point-of-purchase display company and we have two kids: Luke, now 4, and Penelope who is 1. I will post pictures by and by, have no fear, but this is intended to be more of a writing outlet than a multimedia repository. Come to think of it, that was one of the reasons I didn’t post more in the other journal–I felt like even entry had to be accompanied by a picture or a video or something of the sort. Well… They’ll come in time no doubt, but this will be first and foremost a text-based endeavour.

By the way, this entry is being posted from our new (old) laptop–an IBM T41–happily running Fedora 10. It’s a brand new release of the venerable Linux distribution and Diane and I are enjoying it very much. Open-source journal software running on an open-source browser (Firefox) running on an open-source OS. Sounds about right.

    Re: Welcome back!

Thanks! Good to hear from you back here. It feels like coming home in a lot of ways–the familiarity of the interface and the text fields and all the rest. Chances are good I’ll stick around. And thanks for the congrats! :)
