Quick thought this morning: Driving from the airport to work I was listening to the excellent Hem album Rabbit Songs. “Half Acre” played and the following lyrics were sung:
think of every town you’ve lived in
every room you lay your head
and what is it that you remember
I haven’t lived in that many towns in my life (Durham, Chapel Hill, Vence, Tourettes-sur-Loup, Raleigh, St. Augustine and Winston-Salem), but the number of places I’ve “laid my head” is significant. The concept of sleep implies such a vulnerability it’s inevitable that the places we choose to sleep would become more a part of us than those we only visit during the daytime. I hadn’t thought about it that way before. I hadn’t thought about what it felt like to close my eyes to newly familiar surroundings, letting the essence of the room and the place work their way into my subconscious. I think we’re still accumulating sensory information while we sleep, perhaps even more meaningful information. Thinking anew about what it felt like to fall asleep and wake up in those places unlocked a bit of emotional memory.
But it’s probably just my sleepiness this morning causing me to dwell on that sort of thing.
Heather called last night and told me all about her recent adventures (and misadventures) in Paris a few weeks ago. It was great to talk with her, short as the conversation was. I miss my friends in the Triangle.

Those things freaked me out!
I couldn’t agree more! I have often gauged my comfort level with a person if (given the opportunity) I’m able to sleep, sing, or cry in their presence. And it’s raised ten fold if any of those happen while riding in a car!
I just liked the verbiage here… : )
Edited (twice) for technical HTML difficulties and stupidity!
And it’s raised ten fold if any of those happen while riding in a car
This is one of my favorite posts ever (especially the last two paragraphs).
Wow! I highly doubt I could have said it any better myself… Beautifully written an simultaneously speaking truth.
I think this could very easily sum up my thoughts and feelings on almost any (romantic) relational issue I can think of at the moment.
I won’t quote the whole last paragraph, but I definitely can relate to the unconscious glances into the side mirror when I hear the clicking of a turn signal; drivers are few and far between that don’t invoke that response! (Which is why I generally offer to drive places…)
