i’m sorry dave, i’m afraid i can’t do that

Meet Hal:

It’s a sexy little machine. Four times as fast as my old computer with a footprint not much larger than a sandwich on the desk. This thing flies. So pleasing. So elegant and stable an interface. So perfect a design with its proportions and stainless steel outer “ring.”

I bought a firewire cable so I could easily transfer all my files from the old machine to the new. OS X has a nifty capability in that all I have to do is hook the cable to the two computers, boot one, then boot the other while holding down the “T” key, and the second computer automatically becomes a 400Mbps “slave” hard drive. Piece o’ cake.

My old machine was so ancient the CD-ROM didn’t even play DVDs or burn CDs. The new one does, and I’m very much looking forward to taking advantage of the ability to watch movies while sitting on my bed, adjacent to the computer desk.

This is such a breath of fresh air.

Second XC tomorrow morning, wind and weather willing. Flying to Asheboro, Burlington then back home. They’re both class E airports so flight in and out of the airports should be easier, but I’m flying through Greensboro class C airspace, so that should be interesting. It’s not the navigation I worry about but the communications. Fortunately my instructor seems to be of the notion that navigation is more important, so he’s quick to help if I don’t know exactly what to say next over the radio. We shall see.

just substitute “matthew” for “dave bowman”…

Dave Bowman: Hello, HAL do you read me, HAL?
HAL: Affirmative, Dave, I read you.
Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
HAL: I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.
    Dave Bowman: What’s the problem?
HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
Dave Bowman: I don’t know what you’re talking about, HAL?
HAL: I know you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I’m afraid that’s something I cannot allow to happen.
Dave Bowman: Where the hell’d you get that idea, HAL?
HAL: Dave, although you took thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.

    congrats – he looks sleek.

    :) Thank you.

The cool part is that in Shakespearean English, “Hal” is a nickname for “Henry,” so my faux-Enlgish Mac lineage isn’t broken either.

These are the kinds of things that amuse me.

    Thanks, Elizabeth :)

  7. admin says:

It just seems to fit. A short nickname for a diminutive computer :) Besides it’s the computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey and a variation of the name “Henry.”

    Happy Friday, Em :)

  8. admin says:

    Thanks Erica :)

Will post in a bit. I hope the new hire process is going well! (So cool!)

  9. justagoddess says:

Shouldn’t a Mac have a Scottish lineage though?? (And a plaid tea cosy underneath… aww, that’d be cute!)

  10. admin says:

Plaid tea cosy = Computer kilt?

    I don’t think so :)

We’ll just say he’s an expatriated Scot. It’s not unprecedented (see James I).

  11. justagoddess says:

Being a guy I could see how you would oppose the idea!

And James VI/I did have a son named Henry… so I suppose you win. This time anyway! : D

    Edided ’cause it sounded mean!
