you’ll never come to dorset

Published on January 10, 2006

Finally got the word today. Mr. Parrish (incidentally my academic advisor) will be my flight instructor for Flight II. My flight blocks will be MWF at 8 a.m., when the winds should be nice and calm and we’ll have the whole morning for cross-country flights, which make up the bulk of this semester. I’m really looking forward to getting back in the air. Something tells me the first time back will have to be mostly a review session, seeing as how I don’t know how much I remember from a month ago. I’ll do some chair flying before the first session on Friday morning (read: sit on the edge of the bed and gesture toward imaginary controls whilst making airplane noises).

There’s something of a baby boom at my place of business. John’s wife is about to have a boy, Bret just learned that his wife is expecting their fourth and Annette is almost due. They and Jeanette (who is childless but with her husband is considering having a baby or adopting) must have talked for an hour and a half in the common area right next to my desk. Children are evidently a big, big common interest when one approaches that age and life situation. I didn’t say much, but just listened while working on a part drawing. At one point Annette did say something to the effect of, “What about you, Matt?” with a smile, to which I responded, “Well, there’s really no interesting answer to that question…” Heh. A million different thoughts swirled around in my head hearing them converse.

With the “sit[ing] on the edge of the bed and gestur[ing] toward imaginary controls whilst making airplane noises” and your “idea of “cool” … sit[ting] alone playing [your] Gameboy,” I retract my previous statement of you not being the typical homeschooled person. :-D

Okay, so I’m kidding (mostly) but it’s interesting what one can learn in a post that could potentially take years to find out in conversation.

Oh, speaking of “playing airplane,” if you want make a cardboard airplane to draw some controls on I have some pretty good-size boxes! Just let me know! : )

babies are everywhere. must be something in the water.

    That’s a scary thought…

Why would I want to make a cardboard airplane when I have access to the real thing? Unless I want to pretend I was at the controls of something I haven’t flown yet, like a jet, or…everything. Hmm. Now I’m interested.

Must be. I’m passing through the “everyone’s getting married” zone into the “everyone’s having kids” stage.

You want I should bring these boxes Friday?? I can make it happen! ; ) I can see it now, a cardboard version of your favored Cessna Citation X… just save me a nice imaginary seat when you fly to Europe. I’d like to be in Brussels on June 13!

Hah! As being one of those entering the “everyone’s having kids stage” myself, let me assure you it’s just as weird on the receiving end. Talking about it with others who are going through the same thing helps. It’s completely new territory. Those of us who are facing it find comfort in others who are doing the same…hence the hour-long conversations.

And no, not immediately…but another year or two wouldn’t surpise me a bit. :-)

Hope you’re well. Looks like the semester has officially started, eh?

The semester’s not quite started yet. It’s definitely not been VMC outside lately, and besides my instructor’s been indisposed all week with family medical issues (nothing serious). So Monday.

Another year or two, huh? Do I get to be “Uncle Matt?”

  9. justagoddess says:

Awww… Uncle Matt! (NOTE: I refrained from adding a “y” to that!)

Nieces and nephews are great! As a proud aunt to nine now, I gotta say, there’s nothin’ like it! You get to have fun with them until they get cranky or stinky (depending on age), then you give them back… it’s fantastic! : )

  10. admin says:

Oh in this case I’d be an unofficial uncle (no relation), if John and Kristi agreed to it at all :) But the title/situation sounds cool.

Well…i guess so. Only if you promise to give him/her a bar/batmitzvah! (Dunno why i would ask such a thing…inpired genius, i assume. ;)

No of course you can be “Uncle Matt”. Perhaps we could send him off every once in a while to visit Uncle Matt and be flown all about the world. Sounds very educational, you know. And of course we’d be happy to pay his way. ;)

Oops…yes, that was me. Forgot to log in. Ugh.
