I absolutely adore this album. It feels like dreams I’ve had, where the connotation of the words spoken (if indeed I spoke any at all) is entirely at the mercy of the dominant emotions in the dream… The real, the recognizable is either absent or pulls on the emotional atmosphere like a warm sweater. I see a spoon and it feels like happiness, a lampshade and I think about the prime minister of Austria, a long-lost college friend and I suddenly want to rattle off the periodic table or some such… Surreality.

To Here Knows When” in particular is a masterpiece. In spite of the amplifiers turned up to 12, I can’t imagine a better song to fall asleep to. It feels like the experience itself, teetering on the edge of sleep, ambient noises drifting in and out, at once surprising you and lulling you with sudden undulations of volume. If someone took a cross-section of the moment where waking turned into sleeping and stretched it into a complete song they couldn’t have arrived at a better representation.

:) That’s one of my favorite Toulouse-Lautrec paintings.

Though my shrunken photograph icon of Big Ben pales in comparison to a Derain (or is it Dérain?) painting…

I can see how it reminds you of the latter, but why At the Moulin Rouge?

The similarity between the way the light seems to emanate from the bottom of the painting and the way Big Ben is lit in the icon was what first tipped me off. Both images have a similar palette and general tone too.

    Ahh… European nightlife.
