i hear the drizzle of the rain / like a memory it falls

1. Fun word of the day: hypereutectic.

2. I bucked the stereotype today. I stopped and asked for directions. Driving back from lunch today in Kernersville, I inadvertently timed my return to coincide perfectly with the President’s arrival in said town. Needless to say, those secret service folks and the local authorities don’t take any chances, and they had the eastbound lane of business I40 completely blocked off. Cars were backing up the entrance ramp to the highway just to get out of there and find an alternate route. I did the same, doing an about-face roughly halfway up the entrance ramp so I wouldn’t have to crane my neck to see where I was going. Got back on the local road with little drama and headed south in what I thought was the direction of the I40 bypass, which would get me back to work. Unfortunately the road I was on headed more to the southwest than south proper, so I drove and drove for quite a while. I finally gave up and stopped at a gas station. The kindly gentleman behind the counter, very engaged in mopping up a very large pool of some undetermined liquid, reoriented me and I made it back to work.

3. Been listening to a lot of Simon & Garfunkel lately, specifically their early material. One song, “Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall,” is a triumph of existential lyricism wrapped in a disarmingly folksy package. The coexistence of the heavy-handed theme and the jaunty melody is arresting.

4. Kind of a neat little treatise by Scott Adams, creator of the comic strip “Dilbert,” on the elements of writing humor.

5. Random pictures of domesticity:

The living room here in W-S, from a few weeks ago when I went on a cleaning spree and scrubbed the house down pretty well.

Still need to bring the rest of my “library.” And get wall coverings. I have the artwork, it’s just…frames can get expensive. Haven’t been able to justify it yet.

From yesterday evening, at the parents’ house. Cleo naps as we all decorate the tree.

I miss having a warm furry body around the house.

The finished tree. Note the lighting arrangement, my annual duty. The star comes within millimeters of the ceiling. That worked out nicely.

I love your Christmas tree :)

    And cat.

    I want to visit.

:) Thanks, Em. We got a good one this year. And I want to kidnap (catnap? No, that doesn’t work) Cleo and bring her here every time I’m home.

    1. I like anfractuous for tomorrow… It’s best used to describe my favorite type of road to drive on (barring any black ice or heavy fog)!

    2. Be wary of venturing too far off I-40, Business 40, Silas Creek (or any other road ending in Creek), or any of the Hanes roads without time to get lost! Either way, props to you for giving up the male ego to ask for directions!!

    4. I expect you to be funny all the time now! Just so you know…

    5. c. and d. Beautiful cat!!! Makes me glad to have Buffy and Reese again!

    5. e, Nicely done with the lights… I have light duty as well… for five trees! That’s right, count ’em five! Sadly they are all fake, and the biggest one is in a room that’s ceiling goes up three stories… so no impressive “within 5 mm of the ceiling” trees, but all the same! Hope this got you in the Christmas spirit!!

    i *heart* pearls before swine

YOU need a CAT. (and an automated liter box to keep your busy life on track).

    2. I’m beginning to realize this. Anything off the main thoroughfares just curves all over creation. I went “exploring” a few Saturdays ago on a whim, just driving around to see what connected where, and I got pretty turned around. Next time I’ll take a map…

  6. admin says:

Agreed. I should visit the local shelter…

Always a good idea, my friend, always a good idea! Maps are useful and valuable (even if it doesn’t necessarily lead to treasure)!

“Exploring” is wise too… I actually moved over here a month and a half early just so I could drive around, get lost, and find my way back home! And let me tell ya (though, I believe you’ve discovered it yourself) Winston-Salem and its surrounding areas do not advocate straight roads nor the normal 4-point intersection if it can help it! (Oh, and I recall from before your want for roundabouts… travel east on Stratford, away from Winston, and you’ll eventually come to a stop light—possibly fourth or fifth from the Hanes Mall Blvd. intersection—where you can turn left and round about the roundabout to your heart’s content!)

Yeah, i know…i miss Donald too, Matt. ;)

Pretty tree and the domicile appears to be coming along nicely, as well. Almost looks lived-in (as opposed to a complete mess or devoid of decoration as many a bachelor’s pad does). I’ll give you an 8 out of 10 (or a 6 out of 10 if we’re going by the UNC grading standard). Very nice, but you could be picking up ‘knick-knacks’ to cozy the place up a bit. Of course anything would look harsh compared to those comfy pictures of Cleo, no matter how cozy it is. For example, I bought a cool looking barrel from some shop Kristi and i went into to look for old headboards…

    Cheers!

    lol

Donald fit those criteria, didn’t he? And as for picking up knick-knacks and such…just haven’t been able to justify shelling out hard-earned money for ’em yet. You know me and my quasi vow of poverty at the moment…

“flowers never bend with the rainfall” is one of my favourite paul simon songs. weird, huh?

What makes it one of your favorites? I have a hunch why, but I’m curious as to the actual reasons (if any–“just because” is always valid).

    Answering your (great/hard) questions…
