trivialities
1. The winds are out of the northwest this evening. They’re changing after the passage of tropical storm remnants. The effect that this prevailing wind has on my particular corner of Winston-Salem relates to my house’s proximity to Stratford Avenue and the plethora of restaurants thereupon. In short, I just discovered that when the wind blows from that direction, a wonderful scent of Swedish meatballs wafts over my house. At least I think that’s what it was–my olfactory senses aren’t known to be particularly attuned. Coming back from my run earlier, having not eaten for several hours, it was agonizing/blissful. I really need to find where it’s coming from.
2. Worked my second multi-hour shift at Harris Teeter this afternoon. I’m certainly looking around for other opportunities, but for now I’m content where I am. It’s good, honest work, active and interpersonal without having to push the product o’ the month or what-have-you. Everything I used to do is coming back to me. I think the supervisors and coworkers were fairly amazed at my bagging and scanning speed for only having been at the register for an hour or two.
One thing irritates me, though: the computer-based training. It’s insane. I’ve probably worked there for a dozen hours total, and about eight of them have been sitting behind a computer screen listening to some hackneyed and redundant presentation. Seriously–when I first started cashiering back in the day, they just plopped us behind a register for a couple of hours in training mode, with an occasional visit from a more experienced cashier to work out the kinks, and that was it. But the process has become more automated and “technologized”–for the worse, I think.
3. Rented Pretty In Pink last night. I hadn’t seen it before. Cute film. I think it’s probably the most dated ’80s movie I’ve seen, though, with the possible exception of St. Elmo’s Fire. The costumes, cars, language, attitudes, everything–straight out of the middle of that decade. I have The English Patient lined up for tonight. I’m overdue for a viewing and appreciation of the sublime qualities of that film.
4. U2 was on Conan Thursday night. Even though I had class at 7:20 Friday morning I stayed up for it, and it was worth it. They essentially were the show–Edge did a “In the Year 2000” bit with Conan (hilarious), he interviewed them as a band and then just Bono, and they played three songs: “All Because of You,” “Original of the Species” (which was awesome), and an acoustic version of “Stuck in a Moment.” Great show.

When it’s that strong and you’re that hungry, you notice it. At least I did.

Argh. Another occasion where I wish Tone Of Voice came through in writing. I didn’t mean that in an aggravated way–more playful than anything.

Prettty in Pink is my favorite 80s movie! Yes it is very dated, but it’s got Andrew McCarthy…I’m not really sure how to spell that name. I get to hang out with your mom at the end of this month and I’m excited about it! Ok it’s late and I’m being really random…sorry.
Just a Thought
I don’t know if you’ve considered this already or not, but with the frequency that you rent/buy movies, I think you should look into a monthly thing. Like NetFlix or something like that (http://www.netflix.com/HowItWorks?lnkctr=nmhhiw). I mean if you’re renting two or three movies a month, then this is definitely cheaper…without the fear of late fees…for real. Check out BlockBuster too. Not a bad deal at all.

You spelled his name right :) I liked it too, just not as much as say, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or Say Anything (in terms of ’80s teen movies). And I’m glad you get to hang out with my mom :) I’m sure she’s as excited about it as you are.
I’ll look into that. I hate renting movies at Blockbuster (big soulless corporation) and I haven’t yet been able to find a nice local video place like Visart, so it might be the time to switch over.
And I have the bike key on my keychain. I’ll see if I can give it to Dad when he comes. Take care of that bike!
