Everyone seems to be predisposed to take these things as the gospel truth. Even the website itself puts forth the memos’ only real claims to authenticity: an anonymous “former senior U.S. official” and the fact that the memos’ veracity hasn’t been unequivocally commented on by either administration. That’s pretty shaky evidence if you ask me. The last time such tenuous “leads” were the only sources for a media report, Dan Rather had a wee bit of explaining to do.
I’m not claiming the memos are a fabrication–of course I don’t know. I’m just saying that we should greet them with the same amount of healthy skepticism we do toward the seeming evidence there were plausible reasons for going to war. There are so many people out there eager to prove Bush lied outright or acted with malice in initiating the war that they’ll grab at anything at all that shows the promise of it.
