It wasn’t what it was supposed to be. It shouldn’t have happened that way. We were supposed to be each others’ grand amour or something akin to it… I’ll confess I had more than just friendship wrapped up in my regard when we talked across the table in that Friendly’s in Rochester after church on that snow-covered Sunday.
I guess I just wasn’t what she was looking for. Could I have even been at that point in both our lives? Doubtful, even if we lived closer together–she was intensely busy with her ministry and her friends. I would have been an impostor, an outsider trying to elbow his way in.
Still, I think about it a lot. More than it warrants, really. But I really did fall in love with her.
See, how can you say that? How can you say that when the percentage of emails and letters that she actually replied to was dismally small?
I don’t know what it was. But… ahh. I still think about you.
