Excellent movie recommendation: I Am David. Diane and I watched it last night; she had already seen much of it. It’s a fictional account of a boy who escapes from a prison camp in early-’50s Hungary and his travels across Europe. It does require some suspension of disbelief, but is amazingly character-driven, with whole scenes and encounters existing for the purpose of depicting the boy’s transformation and experiences more vividly, not solely to advance the plot, something I admire in a film. It reminded me a lot of my experience of reading The Giver, existing as a similar sort of fable, albeit one with slightly more realistic overtones. The film is particularly skillful in communicating textures and colors and sensory impressions, which affected me greatly seeing as how I remember experiencing things the same way when I was the protagonist’s age, and even now. It’s worth a view.
Diane’s and my first Total Truth class was at the church on Wednesday. We’re leading a group study of Nancy Pearcey’s book that will run through the early part of June. We were disappointed with the turnout (only 4 out of a church of several thousand, with good “publicity”) but are confident we are where are supposed to be and that God has a specific purpose for bringing each of the attendees to the class, including us. Hopefully as the previous semester of classes ends more will pick up our course, though even if they don’t it’s just as well–smaller groups can be more condusive to better discussions.
