Have you ever fallen asleep while driving, even if just for a split second? I did last night. I had to drive from Chapel Hill to Cary, about a 25-minute jaunt, and while I was wide awake upon departure, somehow about 15-20 minutes into the drive I couldn’t keep my eyes open for the life of me. I’m starting to think it was a momentary attack of narcolepsy or something. I rolled down the window to the freezing cold, turned up the music, pinched myself, hummed\/sang along–nothing helped. Well, nothing that is except nodding off and scaring myself silly in the process of snapping back awake. Even have the experience that the more you try not to do something, the more prone you are to doing it? Yeah.<\/p>\n
Weird. The only culprits I can think of were:<\/p>\n
1. I had just had a good 4+ mile run about 45 minutes prior to departure.
\n2. I had just eaten (not a lot, but still).
\n3. The music was somewhat hypnotic (early Aphex Twin ambient stuff).
\n4. Cruise control was in effect.<\/p>\n
And by the time I disabled those last two, the damage was done–my body was thoroughly convinced that it was bedtime. It even took me about half an hour to snap out of my grogginess at home group.<\/p>\n
