The moon was visible through them, and the veil between it and the ground gave it a wide, milky white ring, appearing for all the world like a gentle supernova halted in mid-exhale.  As my run progressed contrails began to crisscross the ring and gave the spectacle an almost iconic quality.  Closer to earth, the wind blew unabated through the naked trees flanking the street, bare trunks jutting from the cold ground, receding into darkness.
