All the good things about winter:  sweaters, bundling up, the holidays, and the rush of warmth after stepping inside, unwrapping scarves and overcoats, and how much more natural it feels to be greeted by warmer air than colder (as in the summer) when coming in from outside.  It&#8217;s just the way of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>The year winds down and I think about my place in it.  The coming season suspends itself in my mind, above the broad avenue of the next few years I typically think about when placing my future.  It walls itself off, becomes its own entity, with emotions that are somehow preserved from one year to the next, magnified as if on cue with the toppling of the next few months.  December becomes a tower, each day like a stone; each feeling conjured by the warmth that inhabits it becomes a parapet to protect me from uncertain visions stretching from either side in time.  From my vantage point here in September, I see the outside of the tower as it approaches, and perceive the light coming from the interlocking stones, telling of the warmth and light within.  I know I can&#8217;t stay.  I shouldn&#8217;t stay.  But as respite for a soul weary of the relentless assualt, every waking hour, of things he should do, could do, wants to do, the pause provided by the familiar emotions of an ageless season will be most welcome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visions of winter come to me today&#8230; Don&#8217;t know why.
