We weren’t there five minutes before Steve Ramsey shows up, who I hadn’t seen since college, and certainly not spent any appreciable time with since sophomore year. He’s a good tennis player, so we all played doubles for a bit. It was good to see him. I don’t know a better storyteller; he has exactly the right cadence–he doesn’t rush the stories and leave out facts, but doesn’t drag things out either. And he’s from Moyock, North Carolina, a tiny town in the northeastern corner of the state where there really wasn’t much to do except goof off, so he’s got lots of material to draw from as well. We lost horrendously, but half of tennis is the social aspect so at least the outing itself was a victory. Had fun with Aaron too. We’ve known each other for so long and so well that when we’re both in the right mood, the most ordinary conversation in the world can have us in stitches… There’s something complimentary about senses of humor that align and great friendships. Wish he lived less than half an hour away. Then we’d play tennis and run and tinker with our cars and watch movies and hang out more often. I have a hunch he’ll be in the area after he graduates in December, though.

I got my car stuck in a ditch last week (October). After visiting Aaron for a little bit, we decided to trek back to my house to watch some football and just hang out for a bit. The previous weekend, my car group and I had made an excursion out to some back roads to do performance (specifically, acceleration) testing on our cars, in the name of fun. I borrowed a device from Aaron called a G-tech; it’s basically an accelerometer, resembling a radar detector in that it suction-cups onto the windshield and plugs in the cigarette lighter. When calibrated properly, it will measure 0-60 mph times, quarter mile times, and a host of other data. The results that weekend for my car weren’t very impressive, so Aaron and I decided to take advantage of the chilly air and do a 0-60 run on the way home that night. I turned onto one of the back roads and slowed the car in preparation for the run. Of course, what should happen then but a caravan of three or four cars came up behind me. I switched on my hazards and pulled over to wait for them to pass. Of course, this being a back road, there was no shoulder whatsoever, so my two right tires ended up firmly implanted in the ditch. My left rear tire was barely on the road, so after much rocking back and forth, much tire spinning, laughing, and mud-flinging on Aaron, who had generously stepped out to push, the rear tires finally grabbed the asphalt and pulled me back on the road. We laughed… I mentioned to him how those sorts of things almost never happen to us individually–neither of us are really the life of the party, so to speak; we’re both pretty laid back, relatively sedate, but when we’re together, anything can happen, quite literally. We get lost, freak accidents occur, weird weather patterns, encounters with strange people, etc… Thinking about it, it’s not really fair to judge the fun you have with a particular friend by what happens when you’re with them, since that’s out of your hands to a certain extent, but just the adventures that Aaron and I have, no matter what, make him a great friend. I like that a lot.

Alana’s leaving in about a week for sunny California.
