Running felt better after I had had a chance to come inside and let my lungs recuperate. A shower and shave do wonders, too.

During the run I heard an altogether unfamiliar sound: leaves rustling in the wind in the dead of winter. I looked up just as I passed underneath a deciduous tree of some genus that hadn’t surrendered its leaves. Dead branches, I thought, or tree. Just noteworthy… Draw from it what metaphors you will.

The moon is beautiful, too. It’s a paradox how these things, parts of our universe, can seem so beautiful, so accessible, and yet be orders of magnitude farther away that those ugly things we surround ourselves with. Maybe it’s their distance that creates a part of the beauty. Even the distance is a contradiction, in a sense: the stars are light-years away, but all we have to do is step outside on a cold, clear night to witness them. They’re available, so to speak, but their ability to inspire emotions of awe and wonder seems limitless. Bigger than the scope of our lives? Perhaps. I feel like I’m going around in circles now, so I will venture to become one with the blankets and say goodnight.

but none of it does compare / to her eyes My eyes close around me again, and the night comes sleeping into my limbs.
