There is a point, in every conversation I’ve experienced, where the elements and the substance of the words makes the transition from banter to a real connection of friends. That’s putting it lightly. It’s almost like the early stages of the conversation and the relationship are searching, grasping for a common element, a shared response or trait on which to rest our emotions, and if the searching continues too long, the whole environment becomes a little wearisome. As significant as that transition is, it’s notable that we often can’t recall that point. Well, I’ll speak for myself, but when I think back it feels like it’s always been that way: that Brian and I have always loved to talk about last week’s SNL, that Aaron and I can shoot the breeze about anything car-related, and that Elyse and I can banter on about Star Trek and music… It’s a point I’m striving towards in several of my friendships. Common experiences have the boon of speeding the process along. I sound all clinical and austere about it, but I’m that way about a lot of things when I step back and take a look at the bigger agenda and pick up on patterns. Maybe I just overanalyze.
