My boss is out for the week, vacationing at the beach. The pace here at work is a little more relaxed but no less busy. I’m designing merchandising prototypes for several Fisher-Price toys, along with displays for QuickBooks (financial software) and other odds and ends.<\/p>\n
Things with Luke are improving. He went through a rough spell behaviorally over the past couple of months, but I think he’s finally beginning to come to terms with who his parents are and that they expect obedience, respect and deference to their authority. He’s learning us, and we’re learning him. A common saying in parenting circles is that you have to choose your battles–you can’t go head-to-head over literally everything. I’ve been finding not only that to be true, but also how to recognize when the battles that I do<\/i> wage have been won. He is a strong-willed child, as were Diane and I, and we’re learning the point at which his will has been tamed in particular situations. It makes for less on-edge and frustrated parents; that’s for sure.<\/p>\n
And we love him beyond words. He is not only genuinely reading, but also writing and can form remarkably clear letters and words for his age. He imagines, remembers and pretends, laughs with his parents over silly words and absurd situations, builds tinkertoys and goes for walks with his daddy, helps mommy cook and paint and reads books with both of us. His gestures and mannerisms have more inertia behind them as his body grows, and he looks less and less like a baby and more and more like the boy he is.
