Or more precisely, it’s a phenomenon Diane and I have been experiencing but just last night found out the name for. Baby Brain the experience of finding it difficult to thrive in social situations populated by adults on account of having spent large amounts of time tending to younger children. It manifests itself in many ways, among them:

Using baby words around adult friends. The classic example is instead of asking where the restroom is, telling your friends, “I have to go potty.”

Feeling like there are many thing you’d like to communicate to your friends or spouse, but after having spent all day with a preschooler or baby there’s such a backlog of needed expression the thoughts “clog up.”

Laughing far too uproariously over imitations of your kids’ mannerisms.

I experienced it very pointedly last night while attending an informational meeting of our Bible Fellowship (Sunday School) class. The class is planning a short-term mission trip to Haiti next spring and almost all the couples in attendance seem to want to be a part of it in some way. Diane and I have never been a part of a class that took this much initiative to fellowship, to teach, to reach out and participate in fulfilling the Great Commission. It’s a fantastic group. That being the case, when we meet as a group, I always feel a drive to participate, to comment, to involve myself, not to “make my mark” or out of some need to be the center of attention, but just because the matters under discussion and the convergence of personalities are exciting. There always seems to be more bouncing around in my head than comes out and when I do have the opportunity to speak I feel like I have to go through a protracted selection process to choose what I would like to share. It’s not run-of-the-mill tongue-tied-ness; I’ve certainly experienced enough of that in my day to know the difference–this is a thought bottleneck brought on by Baby Brain. Diane experiences it too from time to time, and it’s one of the main reasons our time in the evening to reconnect through conversation is so crucial. We’ll always work to keep that.

This is a new phenomenon for me.
