Luke and I visited the library yesterday. He had actually slept during naptime, which pushes back his bedtime an hour or so and gives us time to do stuff together in the evenings. We hadn’t been to the library in a while and I didn’t have anything checked out, so we made a trip of it.<\/p>\n
He always loves to go and I really enjoy taking him. There’s a kids’ reading area decked out like a jungle\/rainforest situated underneath the staircase to the upper level, and his favorite thing is to find the cushions just behind the stairs and camp out with a book. There are a few cubbyholes with Berenstain Bears, Richard Scarry, Curious George and Clifford books and I’ll usually read him one while we’re there. He checked out two Clifford books, and we found some space books in the juvenile non-fiction, so he scored The Moon Book<\/i>, one about the solar system and one about spacecraft too.<\/p>\n
As for me, because of Luke’s presence I didn’t have the opportunity I usually do to just mull around and leisurely scan the bookshelves for something interesting, so I just hit my usual two spots: the computer books and the transportation section. I checked out JavaScript for Dummies<\/i> again (I will<\/i> learn this language one of these days) and I found The Airport Book<\/i>, a 30-year-old but still-interesting photo book detailing the evolution of the airport from the beginning of last century. Good stuff.<\/p>\n

In other news, the stimulus bill that just passed the Senate me physically sick to think about. There’s so much I could say about it I don’t even know where to start. There is nothing good about it; absolutely nothing. It’s wrong on every level, from assumptions about human nature to the economic theory behind it to the concept of the role of government that it represents right down to the historical results from these sorts of massive government interventions. I challenge any good liberal to show me one<\/i> instance in which a massive taxpayer-funded government intervention has unequivocally succeeded in lifting a country’s economy out of a financial crisis. It’s never happened. So essentially this is a experiment with no historical success record based on a faulty idea of the role of government, deviating drastically away from the founding principles of this country, funded with trillions of our children’s and grandchildren’s money. Wonderful.<\/p>\n
I’ve been reading Thomas Sowell’s<\/a> The Vision of the Anointed<\/a><\/i> lately and there is so much in the book that rings true with respect to the present situation. Especially with regard to how these agenda-driven policies get railroaded through Congress despite a complete lack of empirical evidence of their ability to achieve the intended result, the book is right on.
