I adore this song<\/a>. I adore all the songs on this album<\/a>, actually. It meant a lot to Diane before she introduced it to me, and I’m glad she did. It’s poetic, lyrical Christian music made with actual artistry… Sadly, there aren’t many singers or bands out there about whose music that can be said. Over the Rhine is the only other band that readily comes to mind.<\/p>\n It’s been interesting to trace the evolution of Derek Webb<\/a>‘s theology through his music. He was one of the focal points of the band Caedmon’s Call<\/a> before he split with them to pursue a solo career (though recently they’ve reunited, I’ve heard). I bought one of the band’s first albums<\/a> back in the mid-’90s and although the music was sold in Christian bookstores and labeled as CCM, the songs on that album were by-and-large very dark and full of doubt. Webb had a more upbeat number on the album called “Bus Driver” that achieved moderate success, he wrote “I Just Don’t Want Coffee,” which is definitely more angsty and existential and contributed a riveting song called “Center Aisle” that describes his reaction to a friend’s suicide. One could argue that he didn’t choose the circumstances that produced those songs and was just writing from his experience, but whatever the case, it was, overall, a dark beginning. And it’s interesting, if you follow the evolution of his songwriting, from his later Caedmon’s albums through to his solo career, while he certainly can cover more downbeat material, there’s more lyrical consistency and he seems less tempestuous than he used to be. He wallows less in his own emotions in favor of extolling the God Who transcends his circumstances and the emotional responses they provoke. Beyond the dedicated pleasure derived from his music, it’s really encouraging to be able to witness a Christian artist come into his own and mature at once musically and spiritually.<\/p>\n as surely as the rising son go on and make me up oh, i’ll still be your defender and you’ll be my missing son and i’ll send out an army just to bring you back to me. ’cause regardless of your brothers’ lies, oh, you will be set free I adore this song.
