Or at least the leader of a modern recreation of his expedition, <i>a la<\/i> Thor Heyerdahl.  It wasn&#8217;t entirely authentic as the three square-bowed ships skimmed through the water, most likely propelled by outboard motors, and I remembered thinking that if it took us this long to cross the Indian Ocean in our modern capacity, how much longer must it have taken using sails and the wind?  We deviated from the explorer&#8217;s route and made our way up the Red Sea near the delta of the Nile.  I remember our ships seemed to have disappeared and we were running at high speed across the sand, which, despite the pummeling heat, was wet and shimmery.  Suddenly we were on the water again, traveling more slowly down what I could only surmise was the Nile, coming up to a fork in the river.  One way led through the locks that would enable us to make it past one of the cataracts, the other, through the cataract itself.  Two of the boats in my party went through the lock; I chose poorly.  Fortunately there was a dock just before the rapids, I secured the boat there and disembarked.  The place was much like a resort, and had the feel of a seaside mall.  I felt a strong need to rejoin my party, though, and searched for a way to get to the locks&#8230;  Then I awoke this morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I dreamed I was Magellan last night.
