My brother David is ENGAGED. This is somewhat huge and I’m beyond happy for him and Rachel, his fiancée. Read her account here. David’s side of it is pending–as he told me when I called to congratulate him, he and Rachel agreed to write their impressions of the evening without reading each other’s. So, as they say, watch this space.

2. Random pictures from the day:

My roommate David and his guitar this afternoon.

I made it rain this afternoon (read: washed the car). Actually it hasn’t rained yet. But it’s inevitable, really. I wonder what the statute of limitations on that superstition is? Still, my car cleans up pretty nicely for a 20-year-old jalopy, no?

L’interieur de la voiture. I can recall a couple of songs where I preferred what I originally heard in the lyrics to the actual words sung. To put it another way, the singer of the song didn’t sing particularly clearly, out of laziness or artistic interpretation or some combination of the two. Consequently, in listening to the song my mind connected the syllables I heard into different words than the singer meant. And in reading the liner notes or looking up the lyrics online, my affection for the songs in question was slightly tempered in learning the actual words.

One is Sarah McLachlan’s “Ice.” One line in the chorus reads, “The only comfort / is the moving of the river.” Until I read the lyrics I heard, “The only comfort / is Innulèa the river,” as though she were naming the river. To me it was almost the key verse, the emotional core of a haunting song. Something about the name of the river, like she’s referencing a constant companion in a difficult time, made the song that much more appealing to me. Oh well. I can still hear it if I want to.

4. Flight yesterday went splendidly. Just a short (1.1 hr) solo flight down to Lexington and back, practicing landings while there and ground reference maneuvers on the way back. It was a confidence booster after the previous Friday.

5. Rented Strictly Ballroom and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. Watched the former a while ago. I wasn’t in the mood for particularly heady fare tonight, just a nice switch-off-the-brain evening at home. I forgot how much I like Strictly Ballroom. It’s a polished, entertaining, solid film with great dancing and funny moments in the rapid-fire, Baz Luhrmann style. Although I couldn’t help thinking throughout the movie how nice it must be to be near eye-level with your dance partner. Still, highly recommended.

1. My brother David is ENGAGED. This is somewhat huge and I’m beyond happy for him and Rachel, his fiancée.
