Luke is becoming very two<\/i>. He looks less like a baby and more like a little boy every time I see him, which is almost every day. There’s a cherry tree in the backyard of Diane’s family’s house with a low-hanging branch and many underripe cherries, not that he minds their state of ripeness. There’s a low concrete protrusion from the septic tank in the backyard that I sat on while he ran the 20 feet to the cherry tree, came back again to me, sat down next to me, ate his cherry, then ran back. This happened many times. He loves to explore and really all that’s required in terms of attention is just a hovering presence. He will walk and run and climb and investigate endlessly.<\/p>\n
Diane and Luke and I had lunch with my parents on Saturday. They were driving through on their way to stay at my grandmother’s house in Hayesville, NC. Conversation was easy and light and everyone got along wonderfully (not that I would have expected otherwise). My dad particularly enjoyed sitting next to Luke. My mom brought us some goodies: a train lunchbox tin full of cookie cutters, a copy of the Newsweek I’d been wanting to read and share with Diane for several weeks, and a DVD of Francis Schaeffer’s excellent 10-part video series How Shall We Then Live?<\/i> It was very thoughtful and much appreciated. I had watched the video series on VHS in high school and it had a profound impact on the way I viewed the world, setting the stage for the knowledge that I could come to a holistic, unified view of society and culture and government and everything else. Schaeffer was one of the first to put forth this idea from a biblical perspective, at least in recent times. We returned home and of course I had to watch at least some of the series. Diane graciously let me do so while she puttered around the room, listening. I have to say I conked out and slept through the Reformation part of the series, but later watched the Revolutionary Age and enjoyed it very much.<\/p>\n
Have I mentioned lately how wonderful she is? She is thoughtful and mature and a fantastic mother to little Luke. I feel more blessed every day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
