I’ve become a bit leery of the lack of internet security, specifically on Windows machines running IE. I don’t buy an extraordinary number of things online, but I’ve talked with enough people that have been victims of viruses or identity theft in some way that I’ve decided to do at least a little bit.

At home, having a Macintosh helps a great deal. I owned my old PowerMac G3, running Mac OS 9, for over 6 years, and rung every last bit of utility out of it. In that time, I had not a single virus or piece of spyware infect the computer, and I had no virus protection software whatsoever. The computer’s performance didn’t decrease over time, either, as ill-maintained Windows machines are wont to do when bogged down with extraneous programs and peripheral junk. I have little reason to suspect less from my new Mac, given that it has an even more robust operating system in OS X.

A well-maintained and organized computer of any ilk will do wonders; it’s true. I’d venture to guess that 90% of computer hassles could be nipped in the bud with proper housekeeping and organization of a computer’s files. That said, I prefer to hedge my bets against electronic intrusion and slowdown by using a Mac and browsing with Firefox. I know one can never be completely immune, but the combination at least affords me a bit more peace of mind, especially when making online purchases.

What operating system/browser combination do you use? Have you had issues with identity theft or viruses? Do you have to defragment or wipe your computer’s hard drive frequently? Do you make an effort to know where your stored files and programs are kept?

I downloaded Firefox here at work for the occasional browsing I do.
