I’m a Mac user at home, but have to use a PC equipped with XP Professional here at work. I’m not a diehard Mac-only person; I’ve always tended toward the “live and let live” paradigm, but certainly, given the choice, I’ll gravitate to a Mac.<\/p>\n
My computer history has been marked by peaceful coexistence. I appreciate the myriad virtues of Macs while being aware of their limitations in terms of software and expense. Likewise, I appreciate the wide array of applications available and inexpensiveness of PCs while not turning a blind eye to their deficiencies in, well, everything else.<\/p>\n
But I’m sorry. I make every effort to keep my computers clean, organized and uncluttered (a much easier task with Macs), but this PC at work gave me the blue screen of death a few minutes ago, and during the last phase of the reboot cycle something struck me that crystallized my dissatisfaction with PCs.<\/p>\n
The desktop had come up, the icons were present and the mouse cursor was clear and not busy. Everything appeared ready to go, but when I clicked on an application to open it, the computer thought, and thought, and thought some more, doing what seemed like additional startup processing when it had given me every indication it was idle and ready to go. I hate that. When the desktop on my Mac at home comes up, the computer is fully ready and clear to devote itself to opening an application–none of this, “Oh I’m ready. Wait, wait a minute,” nonsense. It just smacks of dishonesty, and there are touches of it elsewhere in my experience with the OS. Perhaps this is my own ignorance speaking, but when a crash is imminent due to lack of memory, instead of just giving me a warning box telling me the situation and letting me close an application or three, it reroutes resources, works behind the scenes to keep the computer running, albeit slower, until it deteriorates further and the whole thing goes down. I’d rather be immediately aware of the limitations of the current configuration rather than an attitude of, “Everything is fine; carry on.”<\/p>\n
