I thought that the morning alone would be ideal for smooth flying, since the air is cold and the sun hasn’t yet had a chance to heat up the earth and cause turbulence-producing convection. But flying with Larry yesterday evening showed that the morning doesn’t have the market for smooth air cornered.<\/p>\n
It had rained all day so the temperature was uniform and chilly. The skies cleared in the afternoon and the wind was absent. I don’t think I felt a single bump as we tooled around the practice area. Wanting to take up Diane soon, I planned my flight with Larry as a sort of reconnaissance flight to find her house, and it was surprisingly obvious. I descended about 7-800 feet above the ground and circled around it a couple of times. I was going to fly down to Lexington but decided to just land at the closer Twin Lakes. The air made it easy for me and I greased it on, both at Twin Lakes and later returning to Sugar Valley. Landings like those are real confidence boosters, more than anything else in a flight.<\/p>\n
Flying with Larry had the potential to be a little intimidating, seeing as how he is a retired airline pilot with many thousands of hours of experience (I have a little over 60). But he loved it and said I did very well. From what I gathered, he hadn’t flown in several years, and said he felt “like a kid in a candy store.” A major difference between the kind of flying that he did for most of his career and that which I do is that when he flew, he would invariably have a premade flight plan for every flight, locked in. The kind of flying that I do, navigating by dead reckoning and landmarks, is a lot more free by comparison (though more choosy in terms of weather conditions). So he enjoyed that freedom as well.
